Question about 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix

My 2002 pontiac grand prix gt is overheating and I don't know why. I changed the thermostat and flushed the radiator. After that, I refilled the coolant with 1 gallon of antifreeze. It is still overheating. What is the problem?

Hey Rayna,,, if you are sure the coolant is not circulating..??.. Then the water pump is no longer functioning.. OR....the coolant passages have partially clogged up.. When you replaced the thermostat , you should have reversed flushed the entire coolant system, check the radiator hoses for wear (they wear out from the inside), flushed the radiator completely..... Do the complete flush and check the hoses.. refill and see how much better it does..

I had an older vehicle that overheated. I flushed out the radiator twice, but it was so clogged up, I had to replace it, so check the radiator. If you inspect the radiator from the filler neck, you can see if there is crud build-up on the tubes. The problem could be the water pump. Typically when water pumps fail, they start to leak from the weep hole(s) on top and /or bottom. Is there any leak from the pump? If there is, that is indication that the pump need to be replaced. Start by checking your coolant level-both the radiator (when it's cooled enough to remove the cap) and the overflow tank. The radiator should be full with clean-looking coolant, and the overflow tank should be about half full (it has a cold mark and a hot mark on it). If the coolant is correct and not leaking or losing fluid, then check your cap for a good seal-the coolant is pressurized when car is running, and an old cap can leak pressure. Do your radiator fans cycle normally? They should come on when your coolant reaches a set temperature. Also, is your coolant more than two years old? If it is, I'd change it and consider having the radiator and engine flushed to remove any build-up of sediment or rust, scale, debris. Which would also be a good time for a new thermostat-cheap and necessary maintenance items. As for possible worn parts or needed repairs-well, your water pump might be something to keep in mind if the above mentioned checks don't stop the overheating. Hope you get it fixed soon before it gets worse-overheating is very bad on these aluminum head engines.

does the upper and lower hoses seem to be the same temp when car begins to overheat? ore the radiator cooling fans coming on before the car overheats? did you pressure test the cooling system and radiator cap? also may want to remove the lower hose and flush the radiator. is the check engine light on and does it run bad?

Run water over the radiator while it is still running and see if the temprature goes down. Likely your radiator is stuffed up. A rod out done by a radiator shop will save a lot of money.

I JUST CHANGED THE RADIATOR IN MY PONTIAC AND IT STILL IS OVER HEATING. COULD IT BE THE THERMOSTAT? I REFILLED IN WITH COOLANT.

There could be several reasons that may cause an engine to overheat. It sounds like you have covered the most important ones. Thermostat,radiator and water pump. Hopefully you do not have internal damage, cracked head, head gasket, or a cracked block. I would try flushing the heater core and pay close attention to what comes out. You know, is it clogged with stop leak or rust. Then while I was flushing that I would drain the entire system and put in some Prestone super radiator flush. You just add plain water with it and run your vehicle for about 10 minutes. You then empty your cooliant system and refill with antifreeze. The flush works pretty well and if there is an obstruction from a previous owner putting stop leak in the system it generally will clean it out.
BTW, are you sure the thermostat is in properly? Not upside down? I think I would start there before I went through all of the work of flushing the system. It actually sounds like from everything you've done already, that's possible. Hey it does happen once in awhile. Was this car overheating when you bought it? If so, maybe the previous owner put it in upside down, and when you changed it put it in the same way by accident.
