Question about 1991 Pontiac Grand Prix

1 Answer

My 1991 Grand Am 5 speed runs good when it is runnung but often times after I shut it off it will not start without spraying starting fluid into the horn of the TBI. When it will not start there is no spark in the plug wires, Determined by using an inducter timing light. The times it will start there is spark in the plug wires. Have any idea what the most likely problem is? Please note that there has been times that the starting fluid did not help .If it is a electric problem I don't understand how the starting fluid could help but sometimes it does help.

It may not be the ether, it may be the act of spraying the ether in. Are you bumping a wire and causing it to make contact, something like that, when you raise the hood and ether it? I think that may be how you find it- go through the motions and watch what you do and how it can affect an electrical issue.

Do you ether it and then slam the hood down? Or do you shut the door hard, or plop into the seat harder than usual after you ether it? Go over it a couple of times, see what you find.

This problem is commonly caused by a dirty automatic idle speed control valve and throttle valve but always run a OBD2 fault code as well as the cleaning procedure. Buy a can of throttle valve cleaner (do not use carburetor spray cleaner!) from NAPA or Carquest (made by CRC chemicals) and spray it into the air intake while the engine is running, use up about 1/2 the can, engine will try to stall hold the speed up, shut it down and let it soak for 30 minutes, restart and blow out the remaining fluid, shut it down and disconnect the negative battery cable for 5 Min's to reset the base idle control. If the above cleaning doesn't cure your issues you need to have the computer controlled automatic idle speed control system diagnosed and repaired by a dealer or electronic engine control repair shop.

I would try replacing the ignition control module and the distributor pickup as the next most likely cause of this problem. Also I would do the following

Hard starting or will not start every time

With the vehicle turned off: spray some starter fluid into your intake. You'll have to take off the hose from your air filter assembly to do this. After you spray some starter fluid reinstall the hose to your intake. And try to start your vehicle. If it starts every time you do this and runs without issues. Then you could have a clogged fuel filter or the fuel pump is going out.

First try to step on gas about one quarter throttle then try to start. If it starts like that I would change the Idle Air Control valve.
