1998 Grand Prix GTP automatic park problem

I have a serious problem i have been trying to stumble and solve. The other day i came home went to put my car into park and the shifter would not go into park. I ended up setting the parking brake and disconecting the battery so i could at least go into the house. I fiddled with the linkage cable a little and eventually got the car to finaly go into park. Now my problem is i can't get the car to go out of park. Is there a simple fix that i am missing or am i gonna have to bite the bullet, have the car towed to a shop for them to take advantage of me because i don't know what i'm doing or whats wrong. Any suggestions?

There is a little slot next to your shifter . Take a look at it I believe your key will fit in it and unlock it.

Check the brake light fuse. When you push the brake to putn it in or out of park, there is a little selinoid that moves a lock in the gear lever. If the fuse is burnt, the lock wont open. Had same trouble on a truck i used to have

Hey I literally just today had the same problem, put a new bulb in the light was on but did not blink!!!! SUPER EASY SOLUTION, you simply have the bulb in too far. I gently pulled mine out a tiny bit and it started working fine... guarantee that's all that's happening to you!!!

1998 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP 3.8 supercharge, Automatic Transaxle - 4T65-E rebuilt 2 years ago. Drove to work (26 miles) and all was fine, got in to leave and put gear selector in drive or 1st and nothing...

Your transmission for the GTP should be the 4T65-HD. If in fact it is not then that could very well be the problem. The 4T65-E is for the other 3.8L naturally aspirated models.

The best place you'll ever find parts and service for the GTP is www.zzperformance.com

They have their headquarters garage and then several authorized satellite locations in a few states. They make their living on working only with the GTP exclusively.
