You *need* to stop driving the car and have the onboard diagnostic computer scanned. The cheapest way to do this is to go to an autozone - they will give you a module to plug into your car, then bring it back to the store and they will give you a printout.

When the CEL is flashing, it generally means something catastrophic has occurred or will occur shortly.

Engine light is blinking

blinking check engine light means it requires immediate attention-have it scanned before you do anything else, and look for obvious issues (low coolant/overheating, low oil, etc.)

Mazda protege 99 o/d light starts blinking and transmision goes to 4th gear. What causes the o/d to start blinking

This is just a guess, but my Mazda o/d light was blinking and it was the transmission overheating. It didn't hurt mine. Coolant was getting low in the radiator. But the engine was not overheating. It was highway driving.

I have a mazda protege 2003 and my car stinks like rotten eggs when i put on the gas and on top of that, my engine light is blinking and my car shakes when i stop at a red light!

i have a 2003 mazda protege. this is the third time my check engine light has come on. the first time the car started to shake when i stopped at a light and the check engine light came on. i had a readout done and it said misfire. i took it to a garage and they changed my spark plugs and wires. 2 weeks later it came on again and my car started to shake whenever i stopped. readout said misfire. they fixed the coils. it has been 2 weeks since then and my car started shaking again whenever i stop and the light came on. what could possibly be wrong with it?

Check engine light is on in my 2002 Mazda protege. What do I need to do?

hi there
some check engine lights come on cars for several reasons like the first person said you can get it scanned by a garage...........most cases it can be a sensor if you turn your car on but not over the check engine light will blink get a piece of paper and a pen now when the car is turned on but not started watch the light count how many times it blinks 12345 and so on when it stops for a sec and than starts blinking again you are in a new count of blinks 12345 so for example if it flashes 3times and pauses starts again and flashes 4times your code to look up is code# 34 now with this you can go on to the web and search the engine trouble codes look up code 34 and you will know whats wrong with it.........most cases its the O2 sensor (oxygen) now these sensors can run you $150.00 each installed but a garage will likely charge you almost $800 to make it disappear by installing all new sensors the scanner will only scan to the first trouble zone when that's fixed than it can scan 2nd if there is another and so on.........................
if you unhook the cars battery and wait a few minutes the cars computer will reset itself to turn off the check engine light if that light comes back on than the computer has found a problem now its time to find out the trouble code or have it scanned
hope this helps and saves you money

1994 mazda protege 1.8 l auto trans won't start

It could be a faulty Engine Coolant Temperature sensor. It sounds like when it is cold, your computer is interpreting your signal from the ECT (or lack therof) as being at a certain temperature and not providing the right amount of fuel in order to start the engine when it is cold. Does the check engine light blink or flash at all?

I believe it still may be a weak battery. Try to give your car a jump and see if it starts

Check engine light blinking and a sound like air coming from the engine area

I've had the same problem with my 1999 Mazda Protege, 1.6L, Automatic.

The problem was a damaged spark plug, resulting in a loss of compression in one of the cylinders.

Solution: replace all spark plugs and make sure wires are in good condition. I recommend NGK Platinum.
