Does the starter try to start the truck when you turn on the ignition key after this happened? If so then it may be a bad starter relay or ignition switch. If not, then the starter solenoid gear assembly may have locked itself in place with the flywheel gears. Could be due to loose bolts on motor causing a misalignment or maybe a broken solenoid spring. If the bolts are tight and the problem still exists, I would recommend that you have a mechanic remove the starter, inspect the gears on the flywheel to be sure that there is no damage done. Suggest replacing the starter motor and solenoid assembly (rebuilt or new) and do not keep trying to start as replacing the flywheel can be very expensive..

The starter solenoid stuck in the closed position. The solenoid is on the side of the starter on this vehicle. While you could replace just the solenoid, it more than likely hurt the starter windings. I would remove the entire starter and have it rebuilt locally or exchange it for a rebuilt one at a local parts supplier. Best wishes.

Went through puddle during raining day,the car started smoking never shut off.It started up with no problem the next day,but later that night it shut off while driving and now won't start 2010 accent

When you say "now won't start" does the starter motor spin the engine the engine just never fires, or does the starter motor not even spin the engine? Do all the electrical accessories seem to work correctly? How deep was the puddle? Did the "smoke" smell like something melting, or might it have just been steam from water on the hot exhaust?

sounds like starter is fried or ignition switch went out. the switch is where you put your key in. did it smell like hot plastic or more electrical from the engine.

Car engine knocks when starting, once started it runs at high rpms by itself, check engine light blinks, and smoke coming from engine smelling like oil

Sorry absolutely no idea with my head under the bonnet -hood- Now has the opil been changed regular like every 5/6000 miles if its gungy and old then chances are you have knocked a big end out or two ,best advice is to trade it in quick whilst it still runs

1998 corolla , terrible rattle after starting, sometimes ignition would just click. this time the engine "diesled" or kept running even after I took the key out...is it an ignition problem?

Sounds more like an "engine running poorly, needs immediate attention" problem. I would first try to isolate that "terrible rattle" sound. Does it do that at every start-up? or just started? I'm just wondering if it's your starter noisy, or something internal in the engine. Have somebody listen to it when starting and see if you can find it. That is most worrisome. The clicking of the starter is very common to toyotas: the starter itself is almost indestructible, but the solenoid attached to it often needs servicing because the contacts inside tend to wear.
The dieseling you speak of is sometimes caused by too much fuel left in intake after shutting off. Engine keeps turning over and firing from hot carbon deposits inside your cylinders igniting the unburnt fuel. It could be from a rich running condition. Buy a can of liquid Seafoam. 1/3 in gas tank, 1/3 in oil crankcase, and 1/3 poured slowly into intake with car running at a fast idle (may need to bump gas a little to keep it from dying: keep your engine running. May smoke a lot, but its just your engine cleaning out, loosening up the carbon and burning it off. It will keep smoking for awhile, but after a few moments driving, it should begin to clear up. If your engine is in good shape, you may notice the difference immediately in better power smoother performance.

Friday it sputtered and shut off 2 times the thrid time I started it I gave it some gas and it drove for a few feet then started sputtering and smoking from the right side of the engine. I pulled over...

Have the water pump checked. The bearing maybe seizing up causing the pulley to jam and smoke up the belt. Also as the motor got hot from pump not spinning, may have caused the motor to shut down as an overheating precatuion.

The most likely senario is that the water pump went bad which caused the overheating in the first place. Then after the engine shut down, the water pump seized up. When the engine was restarted, the timing belt started to smoke because the water pump, which runs off the timing belt, was not turning. Since the engine overheated to the point of shutting down, blown head gaskets are a possibility. Put a new timing belt and water pump on it and start it up. If it runs OK, you're good to go.
