Question about 2001 Pontiac Grand Am SE

1 Answer

I have a 2001 Grand Am and it is sitting in my drivway. The POS will crank and turn over an occationally cough as if trying to start but wont. I have drained my battery 3 times trying to start the thing. I have tried the 10 minute wait but to no avail. My security light is on all the time during the wait and never flashes. I cn hear my fuel pump engage and can smell fuel but it won't start. Do you have any other suggestions besides pushing it into traffic?

I had it running by spraying ether directly into the intake. So there is spark and the car ran very good until this. I am assuming it is the fuel pump and will be replacing that, the sock (prefilter) and fuel filter this weekend.

Hi

It sounds like one of 3 things but it is hard to say with no diagnostic codes.

1. Ignition Module
2. Coil Pack/s
3. Immobiliser fault

Is there any spark getting to the engine? and was there any problems with the car previously? how was it driving up until this fault? please clarify

Regards
Dan

Well if it is running off ether then it could be either fuel or air, is the MAF sensor good? you can clean this up to test. otherwise you are most likely correct although a dodgy cranksharft sansor could also cause the fault. good luck anyways sorry I could not be of more help. Regards and happy new year.

My 2001 Pontiac Grand Am GT turns over but won't start. What could the problem be?

Maybe a simple reset of the computer may do the trick. You will porbably need a car charger for this because it takes awhile. To do this, Try to start the car....leave the ignition on.....wait exactly 10 min....try and start it again....leave it on....wait another 10 min try to start it this time and it should fire up for you. You must do this exactly so as i say it takes a lot of battery . It took me 3hrs in the middle of winter in my drivway to do this the first time with success. Ive done it about three times since and it is a breeze when you stick to it. I hope this helps,

Cranks wont start

Check the fuel pump. Turn the ignition to the on position and listen close to the gas tank for the hum of the pump. Tap on the tank while the ignition is on to see if a little jarring will start the pump. In either case if no noise is heard you have the problem.

My 2001 pontiac grand am does not want to start.

check and make sure your security light isn't on.  The security feature malfunctions on these models often.  If the security light is on, turn everything in the car off (radio, a.c. etc.) turn the key off, turn it back on to acc tap it into start until if just starts to turn over then leave it in the relaxed start position.  Allow the car to just sit like this for up to 20 minutes.  The security light will go off and you will then be able to turn the key off and then start the vehicle.
