Question about 1997 Mazda Protege

1 Answer

I bought a 1997 mazda protege and after having it for a little over a week i have been noticing that the transmission slips when going into 3rd gear once in a while(133,000 miles on it) transmission fluid is brown but no burnt smell. I want to do a fluid and filter change but am worried about making it worse after doing so. Any suggestions?

You may try to change your transmission fluid and filter. If that doesn't fix the problem you may opt to change your gear for the tranny using a high quality automatic transmission rebuild kits or choose the OEM.

Changing your transmission fluid and filter will help lubricate the tranny better. That will give you proper response regarding shifting. Just be sure you put the right amount and right viscosity for your transmission fluid.

Ihave a 1997 mazda protege and after having it for a week I noticed the transmission will slip when going into 3rd gear (automatic transsion) the fuid is brown and I was worried about really messing things...

.One of the most common causes of a slipping transmission is a low automatic transmission fluid level, also a dirty and/or clogged automatic transmission filter can impede the normal flow of automatic transmission fluid throughout an automatic transmission and cause the transmission to slip. Adequate, unobstructed transmission fluid flow is necessary for the optimal operation and function of an automatic transmission, including the function of the transmission bands and gears, two transmission components that routinely cause transmission slippage.Another cause would be faulty torque converter action and maladjusted transmission band.

You are going to need a transmission shop. Mazdas do not always throw codes. You have an early OBD transmission, which do not send out many codes.

it sound like there is a problem with the synchronizers and or the gears them selves. either way you will need to have the trans rebuilt before you can not put it into any gear.

Try changing the fuel filter. Many times fuel problems can be mistaken for transmission problems because the motor is starving for gas.
