Question about 2007 Ford Fusion I4 SEL Sedan

The Ford rotors that I have has a grey protective coating on them. Does this coating have to be removed prior to installation, If so, how is this removed?

Yes, you only need to clean the surfaces where the pads rub. You can use Brake clean or Alcohol. Never anything with oil like Kerosene.

The protective surface should have come with instructions recommending cleaning the surface. The brakes might grab and smell if you do not remove the protective layer.

The best is to remove the tire from the rim, clean the rim to remove dust, dirt. oil etc. Remove any rust with a course sandpaper, sand the rim starting with a medium paper to a fine texture. Prep the surface to be painted and remove the valve stem (you will need a tool to install a new one). Prior to painting, wipe the surface with a paint thiner, prime the rim with a quality automotive grade primer. Paint the rims with your color choice in even strokes moving completly across the rim each pass, slightly overlap each stroke. Allow the paint to completly dry. To help protect the rim longer apply one or two coats of a quality clear coat to the painted surface.

I've changed rotors before but never on a 4 wheel drive. Could you tell me how to on a 1989 ford ranger?


Brake Rotor (Disc) - REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
  1. Loosen the wheel lug nuts.
  2. Jack up the front of the vehicle and support on jackstands.
  3. Remove the wheel and tire.
  4. Remove the brake caliper assembly as described earlier in this section, but do not disconnect the brake hose.
  5. Suspend the caliper assembly by a piece of wire. Do not allow it to hang by the brake hose.
  6. Follow the procedure given under wheel bearing removal in Suspension and Steering for models with manual and automatic locking hubs (lines down).
New rotor assemblies come protected with an anti-rust coating which should be removed with denatured alcohol or degreaser. New hubs must be packed with EP wheel bearing grease.
  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.


Front Wheel Bearings - REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

With Manual Locking Hubs
(see Figures 2 through 17)

  1. Raise the vehicle and install jackstands.
  2. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
  3. Remove the retainer washers from the lug nut studs and remove the manual locking hub assembly from the spindle.
  4. Remove the snapring and spacer from the end of the spindle shaft.
  5. Remove the outer wheel bearing locknut from the spindle using 4 prong spindle nut spanner wrench, T86T-1197-A or equivalent. Make sure the tabs on the tool engage the slots in the locknut.
  6. Remove the locknut washer from the spindle.
  7. Remove the inner wheel bearing locknut from the spindle using 4 prong spindle nut spanner wrench, T86T-1197-A or equivalent. Make sure the tabs on the tool engage the slots in the locknut.
  8. Remove the outer bearing cone and roller assembly from the hub. Remove the hub and rotor from the spindle.
  9. Using seal removal tool 1175-AC or equivalent remove and discard the grease seal. Remove the inner bearing cone and roller assembly from the hub.
  10. Clean the inner and outer bearing assemblies in solvent. Inspect the bearings and the cones for wear and damage. Replace defective parts, as required.
  11. If the cups are worn or damaged, remove them with front hub remover tool T81P-1104-C and tool T77F-1102-A or equivalent.
  12. Wipe the old grease from the spindle. Check the spindle for excessive wear or damage. Replace defective parts, as required.

Remove front rotors


Assuming you have the vehicle raised and the wheel removed, your next move is to uninstall the brake caliper. To do this, you need to push the caliper piston back into its cylinder, which is best accomplished while still in place. I use a large C-clamp that will span the caliper and push onto the outer brake pad. You can also use long-handle pliers and use a 1/2" or so socket to push on the brake pad. Once the caliper is off, hang it carefully out of the way so it doesn't hang on the hose. Now you are looking at the rotor. If it's stuck in place get some penetrating oil around the inner circle where it contacts the hub. If you are replacing the rotor, get some eye protection on and hammer away on the rotor til it's off, but if you need to save the rotor, then gentler persuasion if recommended. Hope that gets you unstuck. Upon reassembly be sure to get some brake cleaner spray and lots of paper towels to clean up the rotor and pads prior to installing the wheel.

NOTE: If excessive force is needed to remove heated oxygen sensor, lubricate heated oxygen sensor with Penetrating Lubricant prior to removal.

  1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
  2. Disconnect heated oxygen sensor from engine control sensor extension wiring.
  3. On 3.0L, 4.0L and 5.0L raise and support vehicle.
  4. Remove heated oxygen sensors from exhaust manifold, inlet pipe, or dual converter Y pipe, using an Oxygen Sensor Wrench.
Installation
  1. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
  2. Apply a light coat of anti-seize compound to thread.
  3. Tighten heated oxygen sensors to 36-46 Nm (27-33 lb-ft).

This is a general question: New brake rotors and drums are usually delivered with some kind of antirust coating. It can be a thin layer of oil, or some primer type paint. I was told, before installing...


Remove the oil or any other coating on the surface's where the brake shoes or pads make contact. This area should be cleaned before installing brake shoes/pads. As for the sand paper for the surface, it is a good idea to lightly sand the contact surface, but just lightly. What is also important is applying anti squeal to the backside (metal side) of the brake pad before installing, and also apply a small bit of grease where the brake shoe hits the backing plate (high spot on the backing plate, there is most likely four raised areas total for each side) on the rear brake assembly....just a small amount will keep the rears from making noise also.

How to remove rotor from front wheel on 1999 ford explorer


Fisrst you want to raise the front end support and remove the tires.Then remove the caliper assembly by removing the two anchor plate to steering knuckle bolts this should allow you to remove the caliper.Be sure you dont allow the caliper to hang by the hose you could damage it hang it with a coat hanger out of the way.The rotor should slide off of the hub,If its 4wheel drive you will have to take the bearing nut off to slide the rotor off.Also remember that new rotors come with an anti rusting agent that is a light coat of oil that needs to be cleaned off before assembly.Also if any of the bearings are removed its a good idea to repack the bearings with a high speed wheel bearing grease.

How to i remove rotors off of a 1991crown victoria


  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
  3. Remove the caliper from the spindle and rotor, but do not disconnect the brake hose. Suspend the caliper inside the fender housing with a length of wire. Do not let the caliper hang by the brake hose.
  4. Remove the grease cap from the hub and remove the cotter pin, nut retainer and adjusting nut.
  5. Grasp the hub/rotor assembly and pull it out far enough to loosen the washer and outer wheel bearing. Push the hub/rotor assembly back onto the spindle and remove the washer and outer wheel bearing.
  6. Remove the hub/rotor assembly from the spindle.
  7. Inspect the rotor for scoring and wear. Replace or machine as necessary. If machining, observe the minimum thickness specification.

  1. If the rotor is being replaced, remove the protective coating from the new rotor with brake cleaner. Pack a new set of bearings with high-temperature wheel bearing grease and install the inner roller bearing in the inner cup. Pack grease lightly between the lips of a new seal and install the seal, using a seal installer.
  2. If the original rotor is being installed, make sure the grease in the hub is clean and adequate, the inner bearing and grease seal are lubricated and in good condition, and the rotor braking surfaces are clean.
  3. Install the hub/rotor assembly on the spindle. Keep the assembly centered on the spindle to prevent damage to the grease seal or spindle threads.
  4. Install the outer wheel bearing, washer and adjusting nut. Adjust the wheel bearings according to the procedure in , then install the nut retainer, cotter pin and grease cap.

you need to borrow the oxygen sensor wrench from autozone or whereever you bought the sensor. Section 03-14: Engine Controls, Electronic 1996 Taurus, Sable Workshop Manual REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) SPECIAL SERVICE TOOL(S) REQUIRED Description Tool Number Oxygen Sensor Wrench T94P-9472-A Removal and Installation Disconnect battery ground cable (14301). Refer to Section 14-01 . On 3.0L (4V) engine remove cowl extension and right side of leaf screen. Disconnect engine control sensor wiring (12A581) from heated oxygen sensors (HO2S) (9F472). Do not remove harness connectors from the brackets. Raise vehicle on hoist. Refer to Section 00-02 . NOTE: If excessive force is needed to remove a heated oxygen sensor, lubricate the heated oxygen sensor with penetrating oil prior to removal. Remove heated oxygen sensors from exhaust manifolds (9430) using Oxygen Sensor Wrench T94P-9472-A. To install, reverse Removal procedure. Apply a coating of anti-sieze compound to threads of heated oxygen sensor. Tighten heated oxygen sensors to 34-46 Nm (26-34 lb-ft).

1999 Taurus/Sable Section 06-03: Brakes, Front Disc 1999 Taurus/Sable Workshop Manual REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION Procedure revision date: 06/25/1998 Disc Removal
  1. Raise vehicle on hoist.
  1. Remove wheel and tire assembly. Be careful to avoid damage or interference with caliper bleeder screw fitting and front disc brake rotor shield (2K004).
  1. ani_caut.gif CAUTION: Handle front disc brake rotor (1125) and disc brake caliper (2B120) assembly in such a way as to prevent deformation of front disc brake rotor , and nicking, scratching or contamination of brake linings/rotor surfaces.
    NOTE: To prevent damage, do not allow disc brake caliper to hang by the front brake hose (2078) .


    Remove caliper anchor plate bolts and discard. Position disc brake caliper out of the way. Prevent separation of caliper housing from anchor bracket because contamination of guide pin journals can occur.
  1. NOTE: If excessive force must be used during front disc brake rotor removal, the front disc brake rotor should be checked for runout prior to installation.


    If additional force is required to remove front disc brake rotor , apply Rust Penetrant and Inhibitor F2AZ-19A501-A or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESR-M99C56-A on front and rear rotor/hub mating surfaces. First, strike front disc brake rotor between lug bolts (1107) with a plastic hammer. If this does not work, attach 2-3 Jaw Puller 205-D027 (D80L-1013-A) or equivalent and remove front disc brake rotor . Remove front disc brake rotor from wheel hub (1104) assembly by pulling it off the lug bolts.
Installation
  1. If original front disc brake rotor is being installed, make sure rotor braking and mounting surfaces are clean.
  1. ani_caut.gif CAUTION: Failure to clean rust and foreign material from rotor and hub mounting faces when installing new or old front disc brake rotors will result in high rotor runout, which will speed up the development of brake roughness shudder vibration.
    Apply a small amount of Silicone Brake Caliper Grease and Dielectric Compound D7AZ-19A331-A or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESE-M1C171-A to pilot diameter of front disc brake rotor.
  1. Install front disc brake rotor on wheel hub assembly.
  1. Install disc brake caliper and new caliper anchor bracket bolts on front disc brake rotor . Tighten caliper anchor bracket bolts to 88-118 Nm (65-87 lb-ft).
  1. ani_caut.gif CAUTION: Failure to tighten lug nuts (1012) in a star pattern may result in high rotor runout, which will speed up the development of brake roughness, shudder and vibration.
    Install wheel and tire assembly on vehicle. Tighten lug nuts to 115-142 Nm (85-104 lb-ft) using Rotunda Accutorq® Lug Nut Socket 164-R0303 or equivalent on a 1/2 inch air impact wrench, or use a torque wrench.
  1. Lower vehicle.
  1. Pump brake pedal prior to moving vehicle to position brake linings.
  1. Road test vehicle.
