Question about Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD

1 Answer

2004 Chevy 2500 HD I dont' know if it is a transfer case problem or not, but i was driving in snow the other day, put it in 4 wheel drive, and a loud pop happened when it went in. It then began popping a few miles down the road when I would accelerate. It quit working shortly after. It sounds like the differential actuator is locking in.

How many miles are on the vehicle?and how often do you use the 4x mode. The worst thing a person does is not use it at all for years and then expect it to work perfectly.I always use mine even on a dry pavement going down the freeway, about once a month ill activate it and drive for 5-10 minutes with it on.Does not hurt it if its a somewhat straight piece of road or a wet surface is better.

I use it 15-20 times a year. It is not from lack of use. Is there a chain that could have broken in the TC or could it have been something else?

That does nt make sense,if the actuator is locking in then whats the problem? If its working right you want the actuator to lock in cause that means the 4x is working. What it sounds like is its not engaging all the way and when you accelerate it is popping out of engagment.I would try putting it in 4x mode and drive it easy for a while.Could be all the hardware in there is dried up some, drive it so it gets lube all around.I know this sounds kinda dumb but those parts just sit there for months or years and dont move, when you fist engage it all them parts are suppose to work with not oil on them?Otherwise id say its the actuator itself.
    Hope this helps

Service 4 wheel drive message comes on and no lights for 2and 4 wheel drive come on. On my 2004 gmc

Often lights under a dash or indicators just blow out bulbs. If more than one thing isn't lighting and are centralized check fuses to see if its blown. Bulb or fuse. IMHO. MIGHT be a sensor on tranny too. Hope not.

Here's a video with detaile dinstrauctions and other people's fuse questions. New fuses?

I have a 2004 2500 HD My 4 wheel drive suddenly quit working I put in a new actuator My 4 wheel drive indicator light show I'm in 4 high or 4 low you can hear my transfer case shift but it still won't go...

May be the problem is not in the actuator in the case but in the actuator that engages the hub locks . Check for vacuum line / electrical wires faults . The noise may be from the hub lock or from a cv joint in that side.

Check for burnt or damaged sires going to the servo on the transfer case. It looks like a electric motor bolted on the bottom of the T case.

Hi, i have a 2004 ram 2500 and when in 4 wheel drive it 'hops" . it feels like their is a broken tooth in the diff or transfercase. i dont know how to narrow it down

if you are on any solid ground like asphalt or cement it will always grab and hop as you call it. if you get into loose soil or real snow situations then it should not do that any more. mine does it every time while plowing snow if i run across dry pavement or clean pavement.
