Interior rear view mirror fell off my 98 BMW 540i

There is a small set screw that holds the mirror to the small metal button. Most vehicles use a small Phillips screw but some use a Hex Key Wrench (Allen Wrench) type screw. Slide the mirror off the button. Make sure not to remove the glue before you put the button back on. Trace around the glue with a grease pencil on the outside of the windshield before you remove it. So you know exactly where to replace the button. You can buy a Rear View Mirror Adhesive Kit for around five dollars.

Hello lindleyjl,

1. You will need to disconnect the wire cove from the upper mirror base. (See image below)
2. Use a flat blade screw driver to disconnect the electrical connector from the mirror. Number 1 in the image.
3. Use a torx driver to loosen the set screw that holds the mirror base to the windshield button.

4. Slide the mirror upward off the the rear view mirror button; number 1 in the image below.

How to replace a interior rear view mirror?

if it came unglued from glass which is what it sounds like, any auto parts store should have a special package of "rear view mirror glue or cement" it is on the shelf. it should come with the all important cleaning solution or wipe, but before you clean (scrape with razor blade scraper, glass and bracket )off old glue, mark the position of mirror, do this on inside or outside of glass with tape or a marker. the mirror has a bracket its mounted to, look closely for a set screw and remove bracket, it might be a tiny slotted screw or hex head (allen head ) note position of bracket in relation to mirror because your going to glue the bracket only to the glass at first and when the bracket is upright the mirror will slide down on to bracket, then tighten the set screw! be sure to follow instructions EXACTLY on package of glue. would be a good idea to get two packs, just in case first try goes awry. its cheap!

Interior rear view mirror removal

Usually, there is a tiny hex (allen) screw in the bottom of the swivel mount at the windshield, near the glass. Insert a hex wrench into that and turn it counter-clockwise a few turns (it is not necessary to remove it completely, and if you drop it, you might not find it). Then you should be able to slide the mirror assembly up and off of the little bracket that is glued to the windshield.

There should be a set screw which is usually a small recessed hex head. a set of small allen wrenches will do the trick. It may also be a torx style screw. Just look carefully and you can fix this easily.
