Question about Volkswagen New Beetle

2 Answers

99 VW Beetle Decided to perform tune-up (based on mileage); was running like a champ Replaced fuel filter (cranked it; ran like a champ) Replaced plugs & wires (cranked it; doesn't run like a champ anymore) Will crank, start, then immediately die Checked for vac leak (none found) Checked Cam Position Sensor resistance (good) Checked Eng Speed Sensor resistance (good) Checked MAF (has integrated eng temp sensor); resistance across pins 1 & 3 for eng temp sensor was good) HOWEVER, checked for voltage at MAF connector with ignition on (pin 2 with good ground should provide 12v) NO VOLTAGE! What am I missing?

Ok, it appears I have a power failure. Pin 2 of the MAF sensor connector should provide 12v, but it has 0.00v. (Pins 1 & 4 or 1 & 5 have 4.86v & 4.98v respectively, if that matters.) So where do I look for the point at which the power failure begins? I've checked all the fuses (leftside dash & above battery) & all are good. Please don't tell me I'll have to chase the pin 2 wire all the way back to the ECM. :(

Seriously? That's your guidance? Gee, guess I better go count my sockets.

Did you get my last reply about where to look for the power failure?

  • wyghtlyon Jan 05, 2011

When you say "plug leads" are you referring to the ends of the plug wires? And to what "multiplug connectors" are you referring? I replaced all of the plugs

Does the ECM provide battery power to the MAF sensor connector?

Hi, since you have the technical ability on how to troubleshoot and fix the car, i will just give you some basic points about the MAF Connector which will guide you through on what to do next.
If MAF output is stuck at 12vdc so it is blow out. If the MAFoutput is stuck over 1.7-2.0 volts AT 800 RPM, then the MAF is bad ,but the RPM must be 800. If the MAF output will not advance above 2v while raising the RPM then it is dead. If the MAF output is stuck at 5v, or 4.75 volt are near maximum , all the time , it is bad. If the MAFoutput is **** below 1.0 Key at key on , not started ,it is bad. If the MAF ground pin is not 0.5v or lower , then your ground is bad, repair wires. if the MAF power pin does not read the same as the battery voltage 12.6v , then you have a power failure. The ECU uses this same power.

If there is no voltage, or the voltage is out of range, replace the MAF sensor.

you must have left something off or broke something when you changed the plug leads .what or where i have no idea ,Sometimes the multiplug connectors can play up with corrosion or strain on the wires .I cannot point you in the right direction because their sre so many variables as to what could have gone wrong

This can be from a fuel pump that doesnt pressure up sufficiently to a crank sensor peak voltage not seen by the ECM, to just a need for maintance like a tune up which includes a fuel filter

What type of fuel does a 99 vw beetle take? It is not turbo and it is a 4 cylinder.

As far as 87, 89, and supreme, I would say at the least 89. If that is what you are referring to. I believe Exxon is the best. I get much better gas mileage with Exxon gas.

2000 vw beetle, turns over engine is firing will not run

My daughter had the same problem! It turns out the key had "deprogramed" itself. Sure enough, we used her spare key and the car ran like a champ. Oddly enough, the back-up key's remote did not work. VW wanted around $200 dollars to reprogram her key and about the same amount to get a new remote. We put the back-up key on the good remote and she is off to the races.
