Question about Lincoln Navigator L

1 Answer

Need to know how to fix or remove front wheel drive on 1999 navagator. it binds up and pops when turning, it dosen't clang like it's a u-joint but feels more like a clutch slipping. I don't know if they even have clutches. If it is too expensive to repair at this time is it possible to remove it and still have use of the two front wheels? Thanks, Cliff Higgins

Hi and welcome to FixYa!

It's not adviseable to disable the rear wheel. The transmission will surely be at stress that it can affect the front differential. The entire tranx axle repair cost will be atleast $990 but your's will not be that expensive. It may only cost you $400.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

I have a 95 dodge 3500 4x4 service truck when u put it in 4wheel drive it seems like something binds and then pops and then it will roll again im thinking maybe the pinion bearing because i replaced both u...

lift front axle and place on jack stands. place front axle on 4x4 and rotate wheels by hand. If front axles are harder to turn than normal then remove drive shaft from transfer case and rotate front axle once more. this will let you know if the problem is in the front axle or in the tranfer case

1999 Ford Contour. Front wheels binding when

Check your Control arm bushings and or your ball joints. The bushings are known to wear out easily and the replacement control arm with ball joint included is only around $150.00. You can check the control arm by putting vehicle on jack stands and with a pry bar pry between the frame and control arm. If there is excessive movement then replacement is required, also when the car is in this position try to pivot your wheel top and bottom(in and out) and this checks the ball joint.

When I turn my steering wheel of my 97 wrangler from lock to lock it chings and pops. What do I need to replace to fix it

Sounds like a bad axle end joint or hub bearing going bad. I would also check all steering components for looseness...I mean ALL...bushings, end joints etc. Anything loose or binding can make a noise. I can't see it you can!
Most times axle joints and bearings need to be removed to physically inspect them. any binding or roughness means they are bad.

My 2000 Expedition seems to bind when making left and right turns. The back wheels appear to be dragging.

you need to check the front axle U-joints out by the wheels, they start to bind up when you make sharp turns, the U-joint won't flex and will need replaced

All wheel drive jeep grand cherokee stutters when turning

You are correct about the joint binding. Generally though unless it is really bad, they just run dry and bind making any external observation pretty much invalid. You really should try and figure out which side is binding and remove that axle and try to move the joint by hand. Very easy to tell if it's bad then.

Jeep wranger, clanging from front end when turning

Probably the CV joints just behind the brakes on each wheel. Try jacking the car up so that the wheel on that side is clear of the ground, grasp the wheel and rotate it back and forth. Do you get that noise? The joints are not repairable, just replace both sides.

Left front popping. already relaced hub assembly. What next????

8002ae8b.gif The top is a 216. The bottom one is a 248. Your option's list calss it something different so I don't know which it is. It sounds like you've got a problem with the u-joint. They're easy to check. If you see a lot of bright orange rust around them, they're bad. Also, put the truck in 4 wheel drive, make sure the front axle engages, and grab the front driveshaft and turn it back and forth sharply while watching the u-joint. If it's bad you'll see the axle side roate a little bit but not the wheel side.

99 RAM 4x4 Front Axle Knock

that is not normal
there is a problem in the drive shaft by sliding so fa into the diff the cv joint"U" joint is no longer directly in line with the kingpin and is binding up as the steering direction is varied
the center line of the joint has to remain directly inline with the turning point ( king pin, strut ) so that as the axle is turning and the steering is turned the joint is in the same plane
check why the axle is allowed to move in and out and you will have your problem solved
