Hello crazee.

One or both of the lift struts need to be replaced. The hatch will not stay open with only one that works.
Inside the lift struts there is a pressurized gas to push the strut piston in order to keep it up.
I would advise you to replace both, they are not too expensive and should be available at your favorite auto parts store.

Lift gate Strut Replacement

Removal Procedure

Caution: When a hold open device is being removed or installed, provide alternate support to avoid the possibility of damage to the vehicle or personal injury.

Open and support the liftgate.
Lift up the retainer clips on the assist rods using a small flat-bladed tool
Remove the upper end of the assist rods from the ball joint.
Remove the lower end of the assist rods from the ball joint.
Remove the assist rods from the liftgate.

Install

Position the assist rods to the liftgate.
Install the upper end of the assist rods to the ball joint.
Press in to place until fully seated.
Install the lower end of the assist rods to the ball joint. Press in to place until fully seated.
Remove the support from the liftgate.
Close the liftgate.

There you are, I hope your repair goes well.
Thank you for using FixYa.

2004 pontiac aztec rear hatch latch

HIt the unlatch button twice, sometimes three times. As it was explained to me
it has to be tight in the winter so it doesn't fly up in the summer. You could also try cleaning the damper rods on either side of the hatch, and make sure that the
mounts for them are still tight. It's the nature of the beast.

My rear hatch will not open with key, or remote control or the button used to pop open the rear hatch.

Thanks for using FixYa and welcome to the site. There is usually a cable that connects from the button to the latch. It may be broke. You may be able to get another key made at a dealership or by calling a locksmith.
