Question about 2001 Pontiac Aztek
One or both of the lift struts need to be replaced. The hatch will not stay open with only one that works.
Inside the lift struts there is a pressurized gas to push the strut piston in order to keep it up.
I would advise you to replace both, they are not too expensive and should be available at your favorite auto parts store.
Lift gate Strut Replacement
Caution: When a hold open device is being removed or installed, provide alternate support to avoid the possibility of damage to the vehicle or personal injury.
Open and support the liftgate.
Lift up the retainer clips on the assist rods using a small flat-bladed tool
Remove the upper end of the assist rods from the ball joint.
Remove the lower end of the assist rods from the ball joint.
Remove the assist rods from the liftgate.
Position the assist rods to the liftgate.
Install the upper end of the assist rods to the ball joint.
Press in to place until fully seated.
Install the lower end of the assist rods to the ball joint. Press in to place until fully seated.
Remove the support from the liftgate.
Close the liftgate.
