Question about 1991 Mazda MX-5

Battery does not appear to hold a charge

The battery charges while the car is running, because it you try and restart it right after you turn it off it turns right over. But if i let it sit for a couple of hours it is hard to start. Sometimes it clicks several times before it finally gets the starter moving. I have had the battery tested and it is ok. It is only 16 months old. Any help would be appreciated. thanks

You may want to check and see that the battery meets the cars minimal cca and ca requirements you may just need more cranking amps a.k.a bigger battery not dimension wise but amp wise.

Alternator not charging battery on Lexus gs300-1998.No battery signal. All other warning signals appeared. Car started right up after a jump, cut back off less than 500 feet away. What can it be?

1. Remove the battery and put it on a charger overnight, see if it holds a charge. If not repair the battery.
2. If the battery holds a charge, replace or repair the alternator' Good chance the brushes need replacing.

Ford focus 1.8tdci 2004 appears to have not enough battery tp start. I have tried to jump, charge and changed the alternator. Help please I need the car urgently

The fastest way to jump it is using another car. Connect the positive and negative on the running car, then positive to Positive, negative to negatice on the dead cars battery. Then try to start it. It should start right away. Remove the jumper cables right after it starts. Now if the batery doesnt hold a charge after running it for over 30 minutes then when you havr time, takr the battery out and test it at a auto parts shop. Its normally free to test it. If you get a new battery and after a week it dies again then its probably the alternator.

have a load test done on the battery as it may have sulphated up the plates and now will not hold a charge.. A long time stationary and short runs do help the situation.

My celica has been sitting in the driveway for about 6 months. I connected the battery and had little trouble starting it, but finally got it to start. Then i turned it off and tried to turn it on again...

The battery connections may be dirty. The alternator may not be charging the battery. You had enough battery to start the car and keep it running but because the battery may not have been receiving charge, it lost power the whole time the engine was running. When you turned off the engine, the battery may have been practically dead. So, it wouldn't have any power left when you tried to restart or even turn on.

If you have a battery charger, charge the battery back up. Check the alternator for proper charging output. some auto parts stores will check the alternator output for free.

The battery is not charging properly, have to jump it and then when you try to restart later, it wont start. I talked to an auto person and was told it was the alternater, not sure what to do and dont have...

If the car runs until you turn it off and won't restart, the alternator is charging and the battery will not hold a charge. If it can't hold a charge, it will not be able to restart the car. If the car runs and then dies, the alternator isn't charging. The alternator may be wearing out and not be able to keep the car running and charge the battery. Chances are based upon your description of your problem (sounds like car runs until you shut it off and won't restart), it's a worn battery. If it's 5 or more years old, you probably need a new one. If you are not sure, test them. I think your battery is finished.

How come my 1991 honda prelude does not hold charge?

Because the battery is going dead. If the alternator was at fault, the car would die after 3 hrs or less of driving, and it wouldnt restart. Same with the voltage regulator. The only culprit when a car starts like it was the last time, is when the battery is getting charged, but it is unable to hold it. If you turn off car, and restart it right away, and it sounds fine, it is one more indication of an exhausted battery.

Battery in 1994 olds ciera will not hold a charge

Take a voltmeter with the car off and measure the voltage, should be around 12V. With the car running, measure again and this time it should read 13V-14V. If it does read 13V-14V then it means that the alternator is working. If it is below 12V, then it means your alternator is not charging the battery. If it's above 14V, then it means your alternator is overcharging and damaging the battery.

2002 Saturn SL1 - won't start, turn over, starts fine with jump

Have the alternator and battery checked. The battery may not be holding a charge. The alternator may not be charging the battery,it should put out between 14 and 15 volts, any less the alternator is bad.
