My 1996 Jeep Cherokee (4L I6) over-heated and stalled. I'm getting fuel and spark and entire engine is rotating fine, but still have a no-start condition.

You mite have fried something in the engine--check for melted wires etc--corse certain damage you cant see--try to get vehicle scanned--hopefully the motor wasnt ruined leaving you with bad compression-may want to test for that

Your description seems to indicate you're more knowledgeable than many.....have you considered the possibility it has jumped time?

Check to see if there is any water in any of the cylinders by removing the plugs and looking at them to see if they are wet.since you said it over heated you may have blown a head gasket.Once all the plugs are out crank the engine and see if water comes out of any of the plug holes if any of the plugs are wet or water does come out of the any on the cylinders you have a blown head gasket. The other thing to check is the timing make sure its still in time it might have jumped time.Good luck let me know something I'm curious.

Jeep 96 dies sometime going down the road and wont start sometimes. will start after 10 miles at times and 24 hrs sometimes. the dash says check gauges. help woman alone need advice

Fuel pump intermittent, check for fuel pressure before dropping the tank to renew pump.
Otherwise check electrical connection at battery, and make sure you do not have an open circuit.
Loss of connectivity could cause this issue, failed fuel pump sometimes work, but are not reliable.
You should see 30-45 psi at fuel rail, and the regulator should bump pressure 5 psi when reving the motor. Higher pressure indicates failed regulator.

Error code p1296. vehicle has been randomly stalling when accelerator not depressed. wait about 5 minutes and will restart. HAVE changed fuel filter, cap, rotor, plugs, wires. when it stalls it does...

but can you save the stall, with a fast right foot.
when it stalls do any lamps die in dash or others?
12vdc to the EFI system is the first check.
loss of power, kills EFI dead as a door nail. so .../?????
and the fast foot trick is next , always.
1,2, test 1, test 2 in 3 seconds at stall.

fast foot"
1: easy, (idle air loss, ISC stuck)
2: tad hard, (egr stuck open ,clean it) or flooding.???
3: impossible , lost spark,. or lost fuel pressure.

and rail pressure is dont with a gauge
all other ways are useless, , unless dry.
only 30psi or more is valid. not less.
no injector runs right below 28psi. (read the specs)

my new jeep runs at 60psi. 3.8L
to check rail pressure ,step one is to get the spec.
the FSM cover this.
My FSM shows no V8s, is that a typo.????? sure...
see the wiki and do tell REAL engine.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeep_Cherokee_%28XJ%29

if you can not tell real engine, i can not tell real specs.
not ever.
USA car, or export???? what COUNTRY ?
again, what car, what country what engine?
cant fix cars , if you can not identify the engine.
here is the list
all tell end if 1996.

on any 1996 , I6, 4.0 engines
1296 means. (not other engines!!!! or cars)
No 5 Volts to MAP Sensor
the 5v line is shorted ,or cut, or the ECU 5vdc power reg, is dead.

with the bad the engine EFI will be hopelessly stuck in limphome.
TPS dead, etc. and will run like craap
and stall.
P1 is a factory code, and you MUST mach code to exact engine, year and maker. or data you read is wrong.
P0 codes are federal codes. and are universal.
P mean powertrain errors.

Engine stalling at any time

stalls at any speed.
this implies moving, this an A/t tranny?
ever do the 60k mile tuneup this decade>?
can you save the stall with a fast right foot.? a key question!!!

which engine options, not all EFI and engines work the same.

there are 4 ways to stall in pure physics
and 50 causes. (misfire, or flooding)
we do test to find the 4 ways, saves a fortune i labor and wasted parts.
ask how.
or the EGR is sticking open (some 4L dont have one)

1: lost compression.
2: lost 12vdc power to EFI
3:lost spark ( ECU cuts fuel if it sees this, ASD relay drops)
4: bad fueling, (too much , or too little)

or the ISC stuck closed.
there are simple tests for each, and the best time is at the stall
in the USA that car is OBD2 and i can log all sensors and DTCs
driving, with a cheap scan tool.
this tells me what is happening.
if all looks good?, then fuel pressure, dropped.
say i see the MAF or MAP working great at stall
and no DTCs ,
i suspect fuel pressure , stoned.

Stalling 1998 grand cherokee

stalls are complex. over 50 ways to stall any gas engine.
first is not doing a tuneup.
then.
1: lost 12vdc power to EFI system (dash goes dead)
2: lost engine compression
3: lost spark
4: bad fueling. (too much or too little can stall any engine)

early 4L engine has EGR and it can stall any engine.
and on all 4L, he ISC loves to stick.
so the #1 test, is , can you save the stall, with a fast right foot.
no one ever answers this.... sadly.
