Problem for Volkswagen 1999 Passat

Oil and brake light flashing

By thorosport on Jul 08, 2008

" "
1998 Passat 110,000 miles. Just purchased by me, and now the oil light comes on and blinks while driving along with the brake light. Mechanic has changed the oil twice, used synthetic, did a motor flush to clean for sluged oil, checked for leaks, checked alternator, checked the electrical system. Everything checks out (as in clean oil, electrician said it could be in the intrument panel). Any suggestions what to check next? Mechanic thinks it is okay to drive as the engine has oil pressure.
Thanks!

- Will do. I know the mechanics did the diagnostics and am thinking a few codes had them a little perplexed. Will get them to do another quick run and post them when I get them myself. Thanks again!

For those of you that had the ABS module repaired, did you also have the oil light & the brake light going off as well. Did all of these issues resolve once the ABS module was repaired/rebuilt?

Same Problem

Feb 23, 2009

-   I just purchased a 1999 Volkswagen Passat just a week ago and I have the same problem. The car dealership said they would have someone to fix it...basically they fixed something on it but in order for it to COMPLETELY work they would have to change the ignition switch on it. They said they called Volkswagen and said that the Passat's have had problems with the ignition switch being lose which makes it go off. I don't physically feel it's loose when I put my key in or start it...but I'm sure that's definitely the problem. So, I have to take it back for them to put the ignition switch on and we'll see if the problem is finally fixed. -   Alewis22

-   1999 Passat GLS 2.8L - Oil and Brake lights started flashing and ABS on solid with 3 semi-repetitive beeps at 126,000. Tach loses power, goes to 0. Engine function does not change when this takes place. However, engine also resists starting now, mostly after driving for a while and stopping. Starter turns over strong, but will not catch. Took it to dealership, and she laughed (again and again); $7,000 in repairs needed (too many to list here), and their salesman offered me $1,500 trade-in value. I'd rather donate it for the tax deduction. I miss my '72 Bug.-   Guest

Had the same problem. It was the control module for the ABS. Dealer will try to charge about 2,000 to fix, but there are several company's that will rebuild it for about 250. You can also take it out and still drive the car while it is being rebuilt. Google ABS module rebuild for a place to send it. Did it a while ago and not a peep out of her.

Hi, Only sensible way forward is to get the fault codes (DTC's) read either at the garage or by using VAG diagnostic software on your own laptop. There are 101 things you could replace which don't need it, so the most cost-efficient way is to get the fault codes and then post them here.

Hope this helps, D.

ABS Module, period. There is lots on info on the net on this issue. Very, very common on the Bosh units (all in model years 98-01)

Is the ABS light on as well? If you have ABS and the light is on (like in Guest's comment) is it probably the ABS Control Module. You should have someone read the code to see if you get ABS as one of the issues. Rather than spending a fortune with the dealer or having a non dealer replacement, check out ModuleMasters.com. You take the the unit off (easy and OK to drive without it, you'll just have no
ABS - which you probably don't have now!), mail it out to them, they rebuild it for $200, send it back and you install it, problem solved. They have step by step photo instructions on their site. A mechanic I use for diagnosis and difficult repairs initially wanted to replace the instrument cluster and then talked about replacing it with a new unit. I went online, read about the issue and fixed it myself. I let him know about it and now he has done it three times the same way with great results.
