Question about 2001 Audi A6
The battery light indicates no charge coming from the alternator,so it will surely have failed. It could also be the poly v belt having broken, thereby not spinning the alternator pulley but I very much doubt it,as it also feeds the pulleys for the other things like power steering and a/c, and you would have noticed the extremely heavy steering. Depending on how long you ran the car for afterwards the battery itself may or may not be fine. Replace the alternator first, get the battery tested (any decent garage can do this for you) and then the battery if required, but you may have gotten away with it.
