Removal & Installation

2.4L Engine

  1. If possible, position the engine so the No. 1 piston is at TDC.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. Remove the splash shield under the engine.
  4. Safely support the weight of the engine and remove the engine mount and bracket assembly.
  5. Remove the drive belts and the timing belt covers.
NOTE If timing belts are going to be reused, mark the direction of rotation on the belt. This will ensure the belt is reinstalled in same direction, extending belt life.
  6. To loosen the timing (outer) belt tensioner, install special tool MD998738 or equivalent, to the slot and screw inward to move tensioner toward the water pump. Once the tension has been relieved, remove the outer timing belt.
  7. If tensioner replacement is required, align the pin hole in the tensioner rod to the hole in the tensioner cylinder. Insert a 0.055 inch (1.4 mm) wire in the hole and remove the special tool from the slot. With the cylinder tension relieved, remove the auto tensioner cylinder assembly two mounting bolts.
  8. Remove the outer crankshaft sprocket and flange.
  9. Loosen the silent shaft (inner) belt tensioner and remove the belt. If pulley replacement is required, remove the center adjusting bolt.

Daughter has a 2004 mitsubishi eclipse gs with 30,000 miles. Mechanic recommends replacing timing belt now but book recommends at 60,000. Why now?

You don't need to. Is he trying to drum up service? The only reason to change belt at 30,000 is if you have to take it off for another work, like the water pump, something like that. Then you might as well replace belt, since it is already off. But just to change belt because it hit 30,000? No, no way.

Water pump leaking

Unless your mechanically inclined, this is a tough fix if you need to replace your water pump. Your water pump is located underneath your timing belt cover (4cyl models) and basically have to have skills to get to it. These skills include removing motor mount bolt and jacking up the engine to get access to bolts that need to be removed. Unless you have decent mechanical skills, you're better off leaving it to the pros. I own a 96 Accord 4cyl 2.2L VTEC and I've done it, only because I needed to replace my timing belt.

2003 Mitsibushis Eclipse GS won't start?

If the timing belt is broken, chances are you would hear the pistons banging into the open valves as the engine turned over (broken timing belt means cam is not turning, and some valves will be open.).

Please reply what led up to the engine not starting, from the last time that the engine ran.
