You have an 88. The lifter could be just dead. Could be worn rocker arm and push rod. Any way, Throw a half quart of transmission fluid in it, run it for about thirty minutes(operating temperature). If the lifter is still good, the tapping will go away in about five to ten minutes. The extra time is to clean out the engine. If it doesn't, replace all the lifters, rocker arms, and push rods. I personally wold just rebuild it, If it were mine. I have an 88 LT1 ,5.7 engine that I am going threw. Ran good, but has 200,000+ miles on it.

Add some fairy liquid to the oil ,about 3 good squirts and half a litre of diesel ,run engine around for a couple of days and it will clear the clag out ,then change oil and filter and use diesel engine oil it will not hurt it ,use a turbo variety ,then make sure you change oil every 6000 miles with a filter every third oil change to keep the engine clean ,do not use expensive long life oil with some fancy claim, that it only needs changing every 20,000miles or whatever ,the cheaper the better

Ticking in engine

ticking noise from an engine is more than likely the rockers under the valve cover. after a long period of time, the lifters and the push rods wear and cause fatigue in the metal and also the lifters can also start sticking from ling usage and dry oil getting stuck inside them

1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee has a stuck lifter how do you fix it or do you need to get a new engine?

Here is what I would do first. Get a can of Seafoam Motor Tune. You should be able to find it at any good parts store. Wal-mart may also have it in their auto section. Add 1/2 can to the engine oil. Start the engine and let it run. If it is a stuck hydraulic lifter I have yet to have this not fix it. Once the noise is gone change the oil. Add the other half of the can to the oil and drive it unti the next oil change. If the noise does not go away I would need to know what engine you have. You should be able to replace lifter without pulling the enigine engine. Let me know if you have any questions and I'll do my best to answer them. Thank you for using FixYa.com!

Engine "ticking" or "tapping" noise at idle. Get

Yes, that is the probable cause. Try an oil additive for noisy / stuck lifters -- Pep Boys has it.

Also, if oil & filter haven't been changed in the last 5,000 miles, that should be done before the additive is used.

Ticking noise from engine

The most common reason is the hydraulic valve lifters. The short term fix is to

a) replace the oil and filter if this has not been done recently.
b) Rev the engine to 3000 rpm and hold for 30 seconds. This pumps up the lifters and helps clear old oil.
c) do this 2-3 times until the clicking stops.

The longer term fix is to replace all 16 lifters.

Other more expensive reasons are
a) a big end bearing. This sounds more like a hammer on anvil hit, and its louder if you blip-rev the engine. Rev to say 2000 and back off slightly and the noise stops. The fix is a replacement engine or engine rebuild.

I have a 2007 Chrysler 300. I have a knocking noise and the mechanic said its a lifter that is stuck and would recommend a dealer. I tried the treatments from O'Reilly's and Auto Zone and they work right...

If your 300 is equipped with a 3.5L engine, high miles, sretched oil changes, the only fix is replacing the rocker shaft assemblys,
they come complete with updated lash adjusters, remove the intake, coils, covers, and rockers, should take you about a couple of hours. there is no cheap fix, sorry. GOOD LUCK. RDJRP

Simply remove the valve covers and adjust the lifters with the proper feeler guage.A cheap repair manual like Haynes will show you how to do this

Does my 1998 Toyota Camry have a lifter problem there s a clicking noise when engine is acclerated? What can be done to fix this problem?

Might be a lot of thing, verify first at wich rpm the noise occures, in which situation. A clicking noise at idle and faster rpm could be the lifters, crank or even injectors (they tend to get noisy when they get dirty, saved one of my friend's tercel with a good presure injector cleaner). Try to duplicate de noise and see if it comes from the top of engine (cams, lifters) or the buttom (crank). If the noise ONLY happens on accelerations it might be a timing problem (pinking, it sound exactly like you were breaking glass). If so get the timing fixed ASAP, pinking can melt a hole in a piston in no time.

Engine ticking noise on cold starts

Sounds like a stuck valve lifter. I'd use some oil additive for unsticking lifters.

Clicking noise when accelerating

Hello, this noise may be a stuck or warped lifter. This also can be a warped wrist pin or a thrown bearing. I would check and see if your oil is sludgy for a lack of better words for starters. I would check your oil level as well. Your valve lash can be off as well and this can be thrown off by this causing the ticking noise you are talking about. Is the noise coming from the top or the bottom of the motor. I hope this helps. Thank You.
