Question about 1994 Volvo 850

Valves per cylinder?

Just re-taxed my UK model 850 SE Estate online - first time since buying it 2nd hand last Nov.
Engine cover (plastic) states 20V, as did the garage selling - I was not impressed by the 10V reviews so went straight for a 20V.
DVLA system has my car as a 10V vehicle... How can I check and what comeback do I have against the dealer if it's been incorrectly described and sold?

I have never seen a Volvo 850 with anything other than 20 valves. It's 4 valves per cylinder.

Ok 1990 geo storm 1,6 litre dohc replaced water pump replaced 3 valves replaced head gaskets replaced timing belt car wont start any ideas?

The car is really an Isuzu Impulse minus some of that car's more expensive features.
my guess is you drove the this 4EX1 engine until the cam belt slipped. yes> if yes you bent valves.????????????
so does compression exceed 150psi on all 4 cylinders now?
we use the cylinder leak down test in all DOHC .
if not , back to the drawing board.
if yes, the we check spark next, then try test fuel.
when did the engine last run , last week,month , year,?
who did your valves, a real machine shop or kid down the street.
a read shop pressure tests the head ,and warp checks it and
then makes sure the valves are ready for long service.
are the head bolts at 58 ft/lbs
did you use sealant on the 3 cap caps, per the FSM book.
if not , top end oiling will fail. and cams wrecked.

the 1.6l DOHC has no HLA's
the lash on valves must be checked, and this is corrected with SHIMS.

a pro machine shop does the for you,did they:?
when rebuilding engines, its best to read the factory service manual first. FSM so you know the special steps just for this engine.
ISUZU engine it is.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the cylinder head or valve cover.
  3. Position the No. 1 cylinder at TDC on its compression stroke.
The notch on the crankshaft pulley should align with the 0 degrees mark on the timing gear case. Make sure the rocker arms on the No. 1 cylinder are loose and the rockers on the No. 4 cylinder are tight. If not, turn the crankshaft one complete revolution and align the marks again.

  3. The valve clearance obtained on the exhaust valves should be between 0.008-0.012 in. (0.20-0.30mm). If not, replace the selective shim by turning the camshaft lobe downward and installing tool J-38413-2 or J-38413-3 (valve lash spring spacer) between the camshaft journal and the cam lobe next to the selective shim. Turn cam lobe upward and remove the selective shim. Install new shim using the selective shim chart.
The rear camshaft bearing caps must be removed to remove the selective shim.
  1. The valve clearance obtained on the intake valves should be between 0.004-0.008 in. (0.10-0.20mm). If not, replace the selective shim by turning the camshaft lobe downward and installing tool J-38413-2 or J-38413-3 between the camshaft journal and the cam lobe next to the selective shim. Turn cam lobe upward and remove the selective shim. Install new shim using the selective shim chart.
  2. When the adjustment is completed, install the cylinder head covers and connect the battery negative cable. Start the engine and check for leaks.

You have not provided sufficient information with regard to your "concerns" the difference has risen. So, if your Cabriolet has a
  • 2,976 cc 3 liters V 6 front engine with 82.5 mm bore, 92.8 mm stroke, 10.1 compression ratio, double overhead cam and five valves per cylinder and use Premium unleaded fuel and get 18 to 30 mpg there should be no concerns. The engines could have different codes for different emission packages depending on what state the car was built for -- example: California Build vs New York Build.

    Timing belt broke at about 55 miles per hour. do you think the valves are bent and what parts do I need to buy other than belt? Oh 2001 hyundai sonada with 2.6L motor. THANKS Jimmy


    The 2.4l and 2.5l engines are interference engines, meaning it is highly likely that you bent your valves when your timing belt broke. Besides the timing belt, you may need a new belt tensioner and pulleys. I would replace the water pump too.

    I just replaced my timing chain on my 302 but when I put it all back together it wont turn over like the motor is locked up and you cant turn the crank by hand??? Did I miss something


    Sounds like engine is out of time and pistons are hitting valves locking engine up especially if it turned over and ran before you took it apart this is most likely cause. Remove timeing cover and verify timing marks are properly lined up on gears, then roll engine by hand, if it does not turn then it is hydro locked(fluid in cylinders with valves closed) or mechically locked(dropped a foriegn object into cylinders or bearings/pistons seized). good luck, if out of time you could have bent valves. Need to remove heads and verify if engine has a miss when you get it running.

    97 volvo 850 with a milky dipstick, looks like a head gasket is in my future, any special knowledge needed, I've done many but not on this car yet, it'll be my firs, I've learned about the head bolt...


    your best bet is to buy a Haynes book on your car from Autozone for $20.00
    It will tell you if you have stretch bolts or not in your engine.

    Lifters on a 2000 hyundai Accent


    3 valves per cylinder 4 cylinder engine, 3X4 is 12, so yes 12 is correct, no u don't have to change all of them, just the defective ones, the reason they want to do this is one of 2 things, there is a problem with the design of the original lifters and they want to update them, 2nd reason is they have been unable to isolated which lifter(s) are causing the tapping noise.

    Timing belt broke


    I've heard that honda engines are made so that if your timing belt does brake theres enough room for them not to hit the valve cover, but hey i could be wrong only way to find out is to take off the valve cover and inspect

    Thermostat location on a 98 audl a6 2.8 liter motor


    This is the 30v engine (the valve cover dress-up panels should say "5V" on them, for five valves per cylinder). On this engine, the thermostat is buried in the front of the engine, and requires serious disassembly to reach. The front of the car must be swung open into what is called the "service position" to allow easy access to the front of the engine, and then the fan, accessory belt and tensioner, and timing covers have to be removed. Access to the thermostat is partially blocked by the timing belt tensioner, so that will likely have to come off too. If you're going to change it all, you might as well put on new parts and get your timing belt service out of the way. You can buy complete kits for the timing belt service online at a variety of supply shops for about $250. It seems ridiculous to do this much work to change a $14 part, but unfortunately that's the reality of this engine.

    you have to do a compression test on this engine I is possible he cylinder head casket
    has blown between cylinders,or you have destroy piston rings and cylinders
    .Remvove the rocker cover and check the valves are
    working correctly and check valve timing put the engine in top TDC on first cyl
    in tis position valves on first should have free play and valves on last should be
    rocking betveen in and out and check ignition time it is possible your problem
    is all from the timing gear
