Question about 1998 Nissan Frontier

I replace the oil pump gasket. need to redo timing of the engine cause it wont start, it has a distributor. which timing mark ( has about 6 marks)on the crankshaft pulley and does it align with the pointer that is attached on the block when the # 1 piston is at TDC.also whats the torque on the crankshaft bolt.

Didnt i answer this one ,but you never stated a distributor ,easy take no1 plug out ,bring up to to TDC no1 and rotor points at no1 plug point on the distributor cap.if it doesnt start then you could be 180? out which is why its better to remove rocker cover but not necessary

2000 chevy s-10 blazer distributor placement


Hi Jerry,

Welcome to the club! Anybody who has never had this same problem has not worked much on cars! I say this because I have done the same thing several times.

Anyway, there are timing marks on the front crankshaft pulley and on the distributor. (see pictures)

You have to be sure that Number 1 piston is coming up on the compression stroke when you line up the mark on the front crank pulley with the indicator on the timing chain cover. To do this, remove the spark plug from #1cylinder and stick your finger in the hole. Have a helper "bump" the starter untill you feel the compression trying to push your finger out of the hole. Then use a wrench or socket on the crankshaft pulley bolts to get the marks lined up correctly.

If you look at the edge of your distributor with the cap removed, you will see two marks on the edge. One is an "8" and the other is a "6". when you drop the distributor into the hole, the distributor rotor needs to point directly at the "6" mark. (Since your Blazer is equipped with a 3.4L 6-Cyl. engine) (See Picture)

Sometimes the oil pump is not lined up properly to let the distributor drop all the way down in the correct position. There are two ways to handle this:

1. you can stick a LONG screwdriver down into the hole and try to rotate the oil pump into the correct position.

2. You can find the spot where the distributor WILL drop all the way down, then lift it back up and move it forward 1 tooth. the oil pump will also move 1 tooth and let the distributor drop again. Repeat this until the distributor drops into the proper position to get it lined up with the mark on the distributor.

By distributor settings i have to assume you mean ignition timing?
How many liters? 4.3L V6 timing is set when the distributor is installed. #1 cylinder at TDC, (Top Dead Center) on the compression stroke. There is a easy trick to do this without removing valve covers to watch when both valves are closed on the number one cylinder, Remove the number one spark plug. Have a helper turn the key quickly from run to start and back to run(Make sure the distributor is unplugged and the coil wire is grounded to prevent engine starting!)while you hold your finger over the spark plug hole.(you could also use a compression gauge if you have one.)This is called tapping over the engine.You can feel the compression trying to blow your finger off the hole. Look for the timing mark on the harmonic balancer approaching the pointer on the timing chain cover. Once this is achieved, turn the key off, and rotate the engine by hand with a socket on the crankshaft pulley bolt until the tdc mark lines up with the timing mark on the timing cover. The engine is now set up at #1 tdc on the compression stroke. Look at your distributor, there are three marks on it. An indent on the bottom of driven gear, A mark in between the two shoulders just above the driven gear and when looking down at the top of the distributor a small pointer with the number 6 in it.(Disregard the one with the 8 in it as these distributors are used in the v8 as well Unless you are working on a V8!)Line up the indent with the mark between the shoulders with the rotor installed. The rotor segment should be pointing to the distributor cap hold down screw nearest the flat side of the housing. Using a long screwdriver align the oil pump drive shaft with the slot in the bottom of the driven gear. Holding the shaft in place with the housing and the two bottom marks lined up install the distributor into the engine. The shaft will turn as you engage the camshaft drive gear. With the rotor installed the rotor tip should now be pointing at the 6 mark at the top of the housing when fully seated. If the distributor will not fully seat then the oil pump shaft is not lined up. No worries though, have a helper crank the engine over a few turns, this should allow the distributor to drop in fully. Realign the mark on the balancer with the timing mark on the cover again, using the procedure mentioned above,and make sure the rotor tip points very close to the 6 mark. Rotate the housing until the 6 is dead center with the rotor metal conductor(segment). If it won't line up you installed the distributor a tooth or more off, Try the procedure again. Bolt down the distributor and you're in. If you get a check engine light afterwards and DTC(DiagnosticTrouble Code) P1345 is set off, the distributor in not installed correctly. The VCM( vehicle control module) sets the running timing based on inputs from various engine sensors so there are no other adjustments to make. Good luck stmusgrove, Let me know how it works out!

Its the same as a chevy v8 pull radeator fan water pump lower crank pully loosen oil pan bolts align timing marks crank mark at 12 oclock cam cshaft mark at 6 oclock replace with new gears and chain timing cover gasket crank seal and water pump gaskets

its a crankshaft sensor on a fixed toothed ring so it cannot move ,unless you have a distributor and i dont think this model has one ,have you left a wire off somehwere

I would verify that the distributor is in time. I had a customer with a similar problem, check engine light, and running poor. Someone had replaced the distributor, but when they installed it, they installed it one tooth off. There are 2 marks on the crankshaft pulley and 2 marks on the driver's side of the engine's timing cover. Line those up and verify the distributor rotor lines up with the "6" on the distributor housing. I had to turn the oil pump driveshaft back a bit to get the distributor to line up right.

I have the distributor out of a 2000 Blazer with 4.3L engine. Manual says to line up 2 marks on harmonic balancer with timing marks on front of engine with cylinder 1 at tdc on compression stroke. Can you...


its real simple on the harmonic balancer the outer ring has a line in it on the front of engine there is a timing tab that hangs over the harmonic balancer line up the line with the correct timing degree 4 6 or 8 but to check for compression stroke number 1 piston has to be up and both valves have to be closed hold your finger over the number 1 spark plug hole and have someone tap the key till air blows your finger off the hole line up timing mark on balancer it should be close now you could use a socket on balancer bolt now drop in distributor lining up rotor with the number 1 spark plug wire rotor should point towards number 1 spark plug on engine driver side front distributor wont be all the way down because it has to drop into oil pump shaft just turn engine over with a ratchet on harmonic balancer bolt one or two revolutions and distributor will drop right in to oil pump then install retainer and bolt for distributor then use a timing light while engine cranks to get timing close to start it then time it correctly after it starts

How to remove distributor on a 1998 gmc pick up with 5.0 engine, do I have to mark anything or just take off bolt and pull out.


You need to mark in 2 places. With the cap off mark the position of the rotor button on the distributor housing first. Then you need to make a mark on the distributor housing that will line up with a mark on the engine itself.
When you put the distributor back in back the rotor button up before you put it in because the cam gear will turn it ahead as it seats. For example, if the rotor button is at 3 o'clock then back it up to 1 o;clock.
Don't force the distributor down at the end because you can damage the end that drives the oil pump. Fidle and wiggle it as you push and it should line up and drop onto the oil pump. Also DON'T turn the engine over while it's out or you will have to retime the engine. Hope this helps.

If you replaced the distributor, it may be out of time. Find the firing timing mark on the harmonic damper and adjoining degree scale then mark those two points with white paint. Hook a timing light on #1 spark plug wire (driver's side front), and turn the engine over looking for the light flash to illuminate when the marks match up. Rotate the distributor until it does. If it is nowhere close, then you will have to align the distributor manually by removing #1 plug, turn the engine CW with a wrench on the crankshaft bolt while keeping a finger in the plug hole and continue until the cylinder is building compression--at the point, remove your finger and keep turning the engine until the timing marks line up. Check the rotor of the distributor which should be pointing at the #1 plug wire position in the cap. If way off, the distributor needs to be removed and turn the shaft until the rotor points correctly when the unit is reinstalled. Final adjustment is then accomplished by rotating the body of the distributor. Whew! Hope this gets you running.

Timing chain


I'll assume you are going to replace the entire set (sprockets, guides, etc.) which I got from O'Reilly for $79.

First, set engine to #1 TDC.
Remove valve cover, fan shroud, fan, drive belt, water pump, 4 10mm bolts from bottom front of head, and 3 10mm bolts from front of oil pan. Remove lower front shield to remove oil pump. remove oil pump/distributor drive shaft, noting the orientation of the drive shaft.
Remove harmonic balance using correct puller (can be rented from local auto parts store). Remove P/S pump and A/C compressor if necessary. Remove timing cover.

IMPORTANT: Before removing oil thrower and distributor drive gear, note direction of oil thrower.
Remove oil thrower and distributor drive gear.
Remove chain guides, tensioner, chain, and finally both sprockets.
The new crank sprocket can only be installed one way, by aligning groove with keyway. The new cam sprocket will have 3 guide holes on the mounting flange, and you will need to align the knock pin with hole #2. Both sprockets should have a small dot (timing mark) on the right side of the sprocket when viewed from the front.
To install new chain, inspect chain to find the two brightly colored gold links. These two links must align with the timing marks on the sprockets. Assemble and install chain tensioner.

!!! IMPORTANT: Be sure to use new gasket when installing tensioner. Tensioner is oil pressure fed and a leaking gasket could allow chain slack, leading to premature wear or break.
Install chain guides, being sure not to let tensioner pop out.

!!! IMPORTANT: The tensioner must be fully compressed. To accomplish this, loosen the 8mm bolts in the passenger side guide (the shorter one). Compress the tensioner, adjust guide to remove slack, and tighten the two 8mm bolts.
Double check that everything is still lined up properly, and make corrections as necessary.
Install distributor drive gear and oil thrower.

!!! IMPORTANT: Ensure oil thrower is installed facing away from the distributor gear. If not, it could get caught in the distributor gear and destroy the two gears or cause engine lockup.

Before installing timing cover, inspect coolant and oil passages. If there is excessive buildup, a good system cleaner is recommended. Replace timing cover gaskets to prevent oil leakage. The best way to reinstall the timing cover is to remove the oil pan, install the timing cover, and reinstall the oil pan (replacing the pan gasket). If you don't want to do that, simply grease the top and bottom of the timing cover and lightly tap it into place with a rubber mallet. This is to prevent damage to the oil pan and head gaskets.
To install the distributor drive shaft, dab some grease on the top side of the gear to hold it in place, and line it up with the distributor. If you are having trouble lining up the shaft, pull it out and look at it from the top, and you will see that the flange is offset. At #1 TDC, the offset will be towards the front.
Install oil pump, being sure to use new gasket.

!!! IMPORTANT: Failure to replace oil pump gasket could lead to inadequate oil pressure, which will cause severe engine damage.

The remainder of the installation is a reverse of removal, using new gaskets where necessary. Before installing your valve cover is a good time to check your rocker arm clearances. This is also a good time to replace your drivebelt, and any other maintenance items as necessary.
