Replacing rear disk rotors on 2003 Mercedes E320

TO replace the rear rotors on a 2003 E320, do I:
1) need to remove the hub assembly on the rotor?
2) what size socket is required to remove the hub assemble?
and 3) what size allen wrench is required to remove the bolt of the brake assembly so I can rotate the brake assemble out of the way to remove the rotor?

Thanks in advance for any response you might be able to provide.

    TO be more specific, on #2 I need the scoket size for the locknut that is on the hub of the rear wheel assembly the retains the brake rotor to the assembly.

Generally when you remove the caliper assembly the rotor slides over the hub assembly. Since I have not done a brake job on this particular model, it may possibly be held in place by the hub nut. Remove the caliper assembly first in order to be sure. I could only find two diagrams for the brake assembly for the E320, neither one had the size of the nut or allan bolt. The easiest way to get the size is to measure from one flat area directly across to the other flat area this will give you the size for the socket and allan wrench needed. If in the US, keep in mind that this is in a metric measurement, so it will calculate to millimeters, which makes it much easier to measure than the American standard. Also, if you do have to remove the hub nuts, they will not have to be replaced unless you scar the threads or round the corners.

    Ok. The allan wrench size is 5mm. You will only need to take the caliper assembly (the brake assembly that holds the pads) loose from the rotor, then the rotor will slide over the hub. You do not need to take the hub nut off. Depending on the wear, you may need to tap the rotor with a hammer to get it to break loose. This is courtesy of the local Mercedes dealership service dept.

I was able to get the disassembly of the brake assembly, but the instructions below is to replace the pads ans wear sensor, once you have it out of the way, you may work with the rotors. same applies with E320 96-2003.

Brake rotor and front or rear?

Okay, remove the wheel then remove the brake caliper and move to side do not allow to hang on the brake hose, use a hook to hang off spring or set aside. next remove the caliper bracket, two bolts at rear of bracket to remove it.
next you will use a hammer to remove the rotor.

NOTE: the way the brake rotor was designed was a bad one the hub in which the rotor slides over and the wheel studs slide into holes on the rotor is bad the hub diameter is almost the same size as the diameter of the seat of the rotor that slide over the hub and what happens is sometimes the rust build up on the rotor seat locks the brake rotor on the hub. i do not know if you are reusing the rotors or replacing them, no sure what job you are doing . the rotors to take off you will need to tap on the rear of them with a little force and turn, hit and turn. you will need to see if they break free or if hard beating and spraying into the rear of them is needed with wd40.
Alot of these rotors also have two threaded hole on the face of the rotor near the studs so that you can screw two bolts into holes to help pull them. use wire to tie caliper up and also use a c-clamp to push piston into calipe to remove caliper if needed, Do not remove brake hose, there is no need to open system, here is a picture of the rotor coming of the hub, also there may be clips on the stud holding rotor on remove them use cutters or pry off do not need to reuse , they are to help in holding the rotor on during asm, if you want you can buy them and reinstall them but never reuse them.12_25_2012_5_41_09_pm.png

no. As long as they are not locked on. They sit inside rotor and when you apply the brake the shoes for your e break push out to drag against inside of rotor. So the short answert is no you do not have to mess with them to replace disc brakes and rotors.

Do you have to take the hub off on a brake job for a avalanche 2003 4 wheel drive


To do a brake job front or rear there is no need to remove the "hubs" the front and rear rotors or rear drums are knock offs. if they are stuck to the hub a couple of gentle hits with a hammer will usually free them up. If you are replacing the rotors than whack away as hard as you would like.

Need to replace rear brake rotors on 2003 Exp Sport Trac. can't get rotor off. see 4 nut behind assembly, believe they need to come off. once brakes off, how will that effect the e-brake/drum brake system,...


The rotor is not bolted on , the lugnuts from the wheel / tire holds the rotor in place. Once the caliper is removed , you will need to free the rotor from the wheel bearing/hub assembly . A large hammer will be required if rusted to the hub, then you may need to back off the e-brake shoes through the slot in the back of the backing plate, you must use a brake spoon and a pick to back off the adjuster to allow the rotor/drum to clear the ebrake shoes. please rate my answer, this helps me out , Thankyou have a great weekend. Replace front hub assembly.


Replacing the front wheel bearing/hubs can be a big job for the inexperianced. Briefly...
Remove tire/wheel
Remove brake caliper assembly, do not remove brake line.
Remove caliper bracket.
Remove brake rotor.
Unplug ABS sensor.
Remove the large axle nut.
Press axle out of bearing (may need special tool)
Remove the 3 bearing bolts and remove bearing.

Removal & Installation
  1. Remove 2/3of the brake fluid from the master cylinder.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle.
  3. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  4. Remove the front wheel hub extension (dual wheel vehicles only).
    • Insert a drift or large screwdriver through the brake caliper into one of the brake rotor vanes in order to prevent the rotor from turning.
    • Mark the relationship of the front wheel hub extension to the hub
    • Remove the front wheel hub extension bolts
    • Remove the front wheel hub extension from the vehicle. It may be necessary to tap around the perimeter of the hub extension with a rubber mallet to loosen it from the hub
  5. Mark the relationship of the rotor to the hub.
  6. Remove the caliper and mounting bracket as an assembly.
  7. Hang the caliper and the mounting bracket assembly from the suspension using mechanics wire.
  8. Remove the rotor.
  9. If the rotor is difficult to remove due to corrosion in the hub area use the following procedure to remove the rotor (25 series only).
    • Clean all the surface areas and the threaded holes of contamination
    • Generously apply penetrating oil or the equivalent to the hub/rotor area
    • Insert (2) M10 x 1.5 bolts (jack screws) into the threaded holes of the rotor
    • Tighten both bolts evenly to force the rotor from the hub.

To install:
  1. Clean all rust and contaminants from the both side of the rotor and the hub flange.
    NOTE If the rotor was removed using the jack screw method you must ensure that the hub flange is free of nicks or marks caused by this procedure. Remove all raised nicks or marks before installing the rotor.

  2. Install the rotor.
  3. Install the caliper and the mounting bracket as an assembly.
  4. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
  5. Remove the safety stands.
  6. Lower the vehicle.

CHANGING REAR BRAKE


For rear pads rear rotors changing procedure you need lift up car,secure front wheels, disconect rear wheels from rotors,(if you missing the bolts try drill it whith portable electric drill at first smal drill 3 mm diameter,then 10 mm diameter.)Disconect the hydraulics breake cylinders cearefully putt it on plate not tears the house.Change beake pads.Unscrew the rotor whith hexagonal wrench.Setup the hand bracke clearance.Putt agan the rotor on rear axis.Assembly the breake cylinders ,and wheel tighening 110 Hm.

NEED TO REMOVE REAR ROTOR


Take off the wheel, remove the brake caliper (2 bolts on the back), then the rotor just slides off, the wheel studs are part of the hub assembly not the rotor.

Replacing the rear rotors on a 2003 E320


So this is what it takes to replace rear brake rotors on a 2003 Mercedes E320;
1) open the bonnet (hood) of the car and loosen/remove the cap off of the brake fluid resevior.
2) remove outer spring clamp from brake assembly (it clips in to the iner edge of the holes of the caliper).
3)using a 7 MM allen wrench, remove the brake caliper.
4) using 18 MM box wrench, remove the caliper housing assembly off of the wheel hub.
5) using a star wrench, unscrew the rotor locking screw from the rotor
6) squirt some liquid wrench on the rotor hub and knock the rotor with a hammer to work the liquid wrench in.
7) using the same hammer, knock the rotor off the hub.
8) using a metal file, lightly file old residue off of the hub and place the new rotor on the hub.
9) set the hub by screwing in the lug nuts and then screw in the hub locking screw using the star wrench, then remove the lug nuts.
10) reinstall the caliper housing assembly onto the wheel hub using the 18 MM box wrench.
11) push back the brake claiper piston to its home position and install the inner brake pad (the one with the snap clips)
12) insert the outer brake pad in the claper housing assembly.
13) slide on the caliper housing with the inner brake pad in place (over the outer brake pad) and screw in the caliper screw rods using the 7 MM allen wrench
14) on the right wheel brakes, DO NOT FORGET to slide in the brake sensor (the one with the black connector) and connect it to the connector on the caliper housing.
15) be sure to reinsert the spring clamp onto the outer brake assembly to set the assembly squarely onto the wheel (there should be no wiggle in the brake assembly after the spring clamps are installed).
16) finally mount the wheels.
17) you can bleed the brakes at this point to release any trapped air (which is unlikely) but be sure to pump the brakes after starting the car BUT BEFORE MOVING IT to re-preassurize the brake system before driving the car.
17) ONE WEEK LATER - recheck brake assembly to ensure all is okay and brake fluid.

This proposed solution is for a 2003 Mercedes Benz E320 and NOT a 2005 model as stated by the limited option selection provided by FIXYA.com when initially describing the problem.
