Your dealership can read the codes (malfunctions) on the cars computer. Mine was the "neutral safety switch" Did the same thing, sometimes it would start and sometimes not. It is a $500 fix, but it will only get worse, back up lights go out, sticks in park (at the gas station) very embarrassing.

Sounds like the starter is on the way out. Tap the starter with a hammer (that's TAP, not beat it with a sledge hammer) the next time it won't start. Sounds like its binding up, and many times a tap (or a few taps) will free it up. This is just a temp. fix, you need to replace the starter.countrycurt0

I've had a similar problem to the above and although I'm not sure what causes the problem, I just depress the brake, put it in neutral and start it right up.

It could be the pnp switch (park neutral position) but if that was the problem you wouldnt be able to turn the key all the way to the start position can u

I have a 96 jeep grand cherokee with a 4.0 It runs fine but then dies at random and wont start again until it sits for a while. Like i say it dies totally at random. Im thinking a sensor, anyone have

First I suggest scanned the fault codes stored there; turn the ignition key (without start engine) "on/off on/off on" and read odometer codes Pxxxx. Note this codes and send us for other details.

Keep in touch.

96 jeep grand cherokee 5.2 want shift gears to about 4000 rpm

Check the T.V. Cable linkage at the tranny end. Make sure the return spring is pulling the linkage back on its own. I fixxed a 96 and an 02 shifting at 3000+ by spraying this linkage and cable with WD40 and working it back and forth untill it moved all the way to the peddle up position by its self. Parts were rusty and sticking when turned past a point.

Turns over but won't start

check to make sure your spark plugs are working. If you unscrew the plug and hold the plug to the engine exhaust manifolds and turn the car over u should see a spark. if you dont then the plugs are bad

Car won't start

check starter relay in the power distribution center, then check main power lead at starter 12v all the time and small lead on starter 12v with key turned to start. If there is power there, starter is bad.
Ignition switches do fail, but far more infrequently than the items I listed. Good luck.....any additional questions, ask!
