Question about 1996 Chevrolet K1500

1 Answer

1996 chev k1500-- when the weather turned cold the transmission seems to slip at start up in the morning. After I get going it seems to shift and run fine. Maybe feels a little soft on the shift for awhile sometimes. Don't see a check lite coming up Trans was changed about 20,000 miles ago.

It sounds like the trans filter needs changed. the fluid will be thicker when its cold and will not pass through the clogged filter as easy. As you drive it the fluid heats up and becomes thinner then is able to pass through easier.

cold slips. can be, clogged filter.
cold AFT will not flow well in any clogged filter.
if lucky this can be it.
do not let it slip or the clutch packs burn to a crisp fast !

get a full flush and filter. and cross fingers.
ill assume the ATF levels is no low or too high. right>
do not guess at method or guess AFT types. ask. or read the operators guide, in the glove box. if not lost, if lost buy one?

If the transmission fluid has been changed was it the correct product, Volvo transmission are very sensitive.

Is the software in the transmission up to date. If services at a dealer it should be. If not go to a dealer to confirm.

If transmission fluid has not been changed, change and ensure the filter is also changed.

VW 1996 Transporter T5 Shifting problems hard shifting when cold but as it warms up it shifts better.

Your fluid is either old or the wrong kind for your transmission. Changing your manual transmission fluid with a higher quality fluid should definitely reduce the difficulty of cold fluid/cold weather shifting. First go to the parts store and find out exactly what kind of fluid your transmission takes. Most manual transmission use gear oil. I recommend using something like Red Line, AMSOIL, or Royal Purple if available. A synthetic will make it even easier to shift. Always check with the manufacturer if you are unsure. I try to stick with the manufacturers recommendations because typically they know what works best with what they've engineered...but sometimes after market fluids can't be outperformed.

Low transmission fluid is usually the only reason power engages late or slippage occurs. But changing the transmission fluid again would not hurt. The stuff really shouldn't deteriorate like engine oil. Be sure to not run the vehicle many miles until the problem is completely resolved < 100 miles. One easy check would be to make sure the transmission lines are well connected and maintain pressure as well as fluid level. The good thing is that Toyota has a reputation of very good transmissions.

Transmission "sticks" when weather is cold

Assuming that the fluid is full, The symptoms you have indicate internal pressure loss within the unit. As time goes by, wear on the metal contact areas where seals ride, become worn. The seals themselves become somewhat brittle and especially in cold weather, sealing of fluid pressure becomes less than desired. Each time the transmission "flairs" on shifts some burning takes place on internal friction plates & clutches.Even with a fluid change, this condition cannot be corrected. Unfortunately, the unit must be rebuilt or replaced. In some mild cases an additive such as Lucas transmission sealer/conditioner can be used, but generally this is a "bandaid" not a permanent fix!
