Sounds like the pump handle is clicking off ?? yes ? -- if this is the case - try and fill slower and/or don't insert the pump pipe all the way in ( like don't cram it in there )-- back it out some.

have the fault codes read and look for a problem EVAP system not venting the tank ( opening the gas cap to put in fuel is allowing the tank to vent until the next time)
never on fuel lights as they are only an indication and can be off

more than likely the sending unit in the gas tank, Could be very costly/hard to replace as you must remove the gas tank to get at the sending unit.
Very good set of instructions here: http://www.ehow.com/how_6483038_replace-gas-tank-sending-unit.html

inside the tank itself (at the bottom of the filler) ther is a spring loaded valve. when the valve starts to stick, the fuel cannot get around it causing the gas to stop flowing. what i would do is remove the tank and check that valve. replace if sticking.

the gas is regulated from the switching valve you control off the dash. Check the valve to hear it switch

Gas gauge reads empty but tank acts like it's full

I also have a 04 with a 1.8L. same problem. I took the fuel regulator off. It is a black box behind the rear tire under car. It only has 2 bolts to take off. After that there is a couple of vent hoses from the tank going to this box. Unplug them and 1 electrical connection. The electrical connection and one vent is connected to a T connection on the box that you can unplug by twisting on the T. Take that T off and look inside where you unplugged the hose on this T. There is a spring and a little plunger inside this tube. The plunger gets stuck. I took a little screw driver and some PB blaster and worked that plunger back and forth a couple dozen times and it unfroze. Put it back together gassed up just fine. I did not look but I was told regulator can be replaced for 200$. But a can of blaster is cheaper.
