I have a 2004 freestar with the 4.2L engine and last week got the engine light with the p0171 and p0174 trouble codes. The idle was rough and yesterday, it got so bad the engine will not idle at all. Any ideas? thanks!

I just had the same thing. Engine light came on. Rough idle. Codes P0171, P0174, P2195, P2197. Within a week the idle got so bad it would die at stop lights. Seemed like a vacuum leak affecting the idle. Found it today. The elbow where the PCV tube enters the vacuum port on the upper intake was degraded, collapsed and had a whole in it. Wondered why it degraded. I disconnected the tube from the PCV valve and found it quite oily. I think the oil sat in the elbow at the intake because it is flat on top of the engine and could pool there, causing the rubber to degrad. Found a preformed piece of coolant hose at O'Reilly that was the right diameter and cut it to length. Put it on, runs like a charm. I ordered a new PCV valve because I think too much oil was coming through it and caused the hose failure.I have a 2004 freestar - _409.jpg_410.jpg

This fords with a 3.9L, 4.2L, 3.8L have a problem in conmon. if the air filter its dirty for too long the vehicle will starve for air causing it to damage one of this components: pcv rubber elbows, intake manifold gasket- either the lower or upper, or the small seals on the intake manifold running control rod. the last item described its ease to diagnose but most people overlook at it. spray brake cleaner on the intake manifold running control rod while at idle and see if the acceleration fluctuate a bit, if it does the seals are bad and you'll have to remove the lower manifold to replace them

Ford error code p0171 and p0174

You should have replaced the upstream oxygen sensors
at 100,000 miles before they failed

The ignition misfire is a separate problem you have to solve

All that free checking is a waste of time

Go to a local non franchise honest repair shop & have the
vehicle properly repaired
