Hello, there are several reasons your car may have a high idle. I will try to explain them to you. The first thing to check is the throttle cable from the foot pedal. This cable goes from the foot pedal, then under the hood , to a connection under the top cover of the engine. You should have 1 plastic screw holding this cover to your engine. Remove the cover and you will see where this cable is connected.

Disconnect the cable and if the idle drops down to normal, your cable is sticking and should be replaced. If this does not help the problem is likely a Vacuum leak. A Vacuum leak is like opening the throttle as it lets in more air. You need to find the leak. As you already have the cover off your motor you can see all the parts. What you need to do is use a Spray mist of water from an old liquid spray bottle and follow the seams on a part called an "Intake Manifold". Then spray around the smaller rubber hoses and any part the rubber hoses attach onto.

This is done with the engine running. When you find the leak, the engine will react by changing RPM or idle speed. The part which causes the reaction is likely the bad part and needs to have a new gasket or be replaced. Some mechanics use Choke cleaner as long as it is safe for plastic and rubber parts. Be careful for your eyes and the painted surfaces of your car. EGR diaphrams and Solenoids with vacuum lines are likely culprits.

The other possibilities for a high idle can be found with a free scan at Autozone or Oreillys and any other place which may do this free. If you chose, you may try the scan first. The scan usually will not pinpoint Vacuum leaks but will indicate lean conditions in the sensors.

1997. Idle seems a bit high. How can I adjust it? I'm getting awesomely high mileage both city and highway but i think it could improve still more and the idling speed feels too high.


The idle speed is controlled by the engine computer through the idle air control valve , there are no provisions for adjusting idle . 2001 dodge dakota sport with 2.5 engine idles high when I start it up, continues idling high, when pushing clutch in to change gears it idles extremely high


Does it do it if you disconnect the idle air control valve ?
You need to know if its a vac leak or if the computer is making the valve open too far.

Car engine idles really high then really low, why?


It can be issue with IAC( idle air control valve) causing the problem.


There are many other possibilities causing these idle issues. Engine idles rough.

What is high idle?


When a car is idling it is at rest.The idle setting refers to the engine revolutions or 'revs'.If the setting is increased so that the 'revs' are greater,the engine will not stall at rest.This is 'high idle'!

the O2 sensor works on one volt .5 is around the running voltage, i would refit the air hose as it will run the converter hotter at idle.

Idles to high


You may need an Idle Air Control Valve (a common problem), I would also change the thermostat as well. If its reading cold it will cause the car to idle high.
