You're going to have to take the center console apart where the shifter is. The cable should be right there, attached to the bottom of the shifter, inside the car. It's probably just held in with a clip.

The other end attaches to the transmission, on the side or top.

To fix it, you have to replace the entire cable assembly. Once you get the new one and see what it looks like, it will be easier to recognize the old one and identify what needs to come off to get it out of there.

4 Door 97 Ford Escort with automatic gear shift moves freely back and forth and is not connecting to any gear. Any suggestions?

The shifter cable attaches to the arm on the side of the transaxle.
Look under the hood and locate the cable coming from the firewall.
You can set the parking brake and move the arm if the cable is broke.

My 97 Ford Taurus will not go into park? I have to put in neutral to start. I am trying to find the name of the part under the hood that I need to replace because it is stripped i believe in stead of...

it is called the shift linkage... if your shifter is up by the steering wheel the linkage will be under the hood but sometimes very hard to get to because it can be behind the engine. if it is on the floor then it uses a cable system and the cable could have broke but from your problem it sounds like its on the steering wheel.

Hi, I have a 1999 Camry LE 4-cylinder automatic. The car is not shifting into gear. I popped the hood up and noticed that the transmission control cable (shifter cable) connection to the neutral saftey...

I think the cable is molded into the little plastic piece. see if you can see the end of the cable. see if it looks like it broke, or was cut. if not, the molding came undone, and the cable pulled from the anchor in the plastic thing.
