Some wire etc probly burned-do a good chec under hood for any abnormal connections and make sure fuses are correct # for each circuit--alternator shud be tested cause the voltage regulator may have failed sending a surge--a mobile scan of system is helpful

2002 astro van , just shut down, lost all power, including breaks and power steering, what can cause this to happen? Battery drained

if the batter has been drained during operation, it points to a serious alternator /regulator failure
The vehicle uses most of the alternator out put during normal operations and a percentage is left over to charge the battery
Check for voltage out put from the alternator and ensure that it is dc volts as ac volts indicate a rectifier failure and will not charge a battery
check for drive belt tension and condition as a bad belt will not drive an alternator at full capacity
I suggest that you have the alternator and regulator bench tested by an accredited auto electrician and have the battery load tested as well to check for broken cell bridges

Sudden loss of power

Are you sure the battery is being drained during this process? That would be a major draw from something, but then you said "...suddenly full power again,". It sounds more like a connection or a terminal working loose at times, not able to pass normal voltage. You sure need a voltmeter, my friend.

I think I would want to have that new alternator tested again, just to make sure it is not defective. A lot of aftermarket parts are turning up like that. Did you replace the alternator and battery because this condition was present? Do you know your battery cables and ground points are all good and secure, and corrosion free? You might want to double check all the grounds you can find- the battery negative cable, the engine to body strap, or cable, maybe an engine and computer harness ground point-look around the top of the engine for a ground wire coming out of the engine wire harness and going to ground at a nearby bolt. Also check all alternator connections.

If you have to keep looking, look at the power side of the power distribution scheme. From the battery, power goes to the Power Distribution Center, maybe called a junction box or junction block...it is where the fuse and relay block under the hood receives power, both from the battery and the tie-in from the alternator, and then distributes it to the major circuits for the car. With all your symptoms, it sounds like the problem is not far from the battery in the power distribution. Sayeth Dr. monte. Good luck.

Was driving 2002 ford ranger when engine died, lights work,no clicking from starter, could it be the clutch sensor?

The clutch sensor would not cause the dying problem. If you have dash lights that is not an indication that the battery is ok sine they require almost no voltage to turn on. Try your headlights with the key on and see if the dash light dim. This would indicate a battery/charging system problem. Also note if the battery light comes on when the key is turned on. If the other lights work but the battery light does not it indicates the alternator has a problem. If all the lights work fine check for power at the clutch switch which contacts the cluths pedal arm higher up the pedal. Should have power to and thru the switch when cranking.

2000safari i was drivin the van died i have no power now and the battary is dead.

A possible alternator failure. It would have shown a battery charging warning light on the dash before failure if this is the case.
Restart with a donor battery and check dashboard for charge warning indicator. If illuminated, then replace alternator.

2001 ford super duty 250- dash lights go dim whan I turn on headlights.

This may be an indication of a poor battery connection, a slipping (worn or cracked) serpentine drive belt, or a bad battery.

  1. Corrosion around the battery cables prevents the alternator from replenishing full power back to the battery
  2. A bad drive belt tends to slip around the alternator and like in #1, doesn't replenish full power back to the battery
  3. A bad battery with a dead cell won't accept a full charge.
Not mentioned above and less likely is a bad alternator. If you don't have a bad battery connection or a worn drive belt, I'd recommend having the electrical system checked out (most chain auto parts stores will do a free check).

Battery light stays on r

When your battery warning light stayed on, it indicated that you had a failure in either your alternator or battery. First make sure that your battery is sound by using a multimter across the battery poles with engine OFF: should indicate around 12V and anything less (usually 10v) indicates a shorted/bad battery. Since you cannot start the car, it would be hard to assess if your alternator is working (with the engine running it would show around 13.8V and anything higher, or lower, would indicate a faulty regulator). From your description, it looks that you had a sudden spike (high voltage) in your circuit and if you could confirm that you have no problem with your battery or alternator, then I suspect that either your car computer has been fried or more hopefully that your car security system has been triggered and you need to get it reset: look at your manual or ask your dealer (or Auto Club technical advise if you have such membership) how to reset your car alarm/security system. Hope it helps & Good luck!
