Question about 2004 Ford Freestar

2 Answers

The rear latch/handle on our ford freestar 2005 came off in my hand. it looks fine. I can;.t open the rear latch now. I got inside the van and removed the little plastic cap/tab the sits directly behind the outside rear latch. I can push what appears to be the latch mechanism but it does not release the door lock. I am left to assume that I need to remove the inside rear panel to re-hook the latch handle to the latch mechanism. However, without being able to open the rear gate, I don't see hoe I can get the insided panel off. Does anyone have any adivice?

I just experienced the same problem. Once the little plastic cap is removed, you will see white insulation foam with slits. Feeling just inside, you will feel a small, steel cable. Just take a pair of long-nose pliers and pull on the cable toward you and it will release.

Here's how I repaired mine. Go inside and remove the plastic 2" square plastic cover. By pushing on the lever inside this area, the latch will release. Push on the door at the same time, when the latch is pushed. With the door open, remove all four screws from the plastic panel. Now pry carefully the big plastic panel off the door. There are plastic snaps holding this on, all around the edges. Now there is another metal cover over the latch mechanism under this panel. Remove this. You now can see into the latch area and put the handle back into the slot where it came out of. You'll see that the ends of the handle can be put back on the round bar, but to hold them in place, I attached 2 nylon ties on one end. You can also purchase a metal push on retainer from the local hardware store. Mine has been repaired for 8 months and had no trouble. Ford used no retainer on these handles and after prolonged use, they bend and the handle can be pulled off. A twenty minute job. Your wife can even do it.

Here's how I opened mine. Go inside and remove the plastic 2" square plastic cover. Just inside you will feel a small, steel cable. Using long-nosed pliers, just pull on that cable toward you. It will easily release.

Electric latch on the rear Hatch door will not unlock

I guess ford was trying to make a couple more bucks by not putting key locks on all doors. Anyway, if you crawl inside and pop the small cover(about 2"x2") off the inside of the hatch where the latch is located you can reach in with a screwdriver and manually move control arms. The lever on the back/far side of assembly is in the locked position, you need to move to the opposite side left or right of it's current position, this will unlock the latch and should allow you to open the door. You mave have to pop acutor arm loose to move it. My problem ended up being the outside cover {license plate frame)seal had been damaged by a ford mechanic, that or it was defective. Water got in and damaged the the lock acuator. Had to replace entire assembly as ford does'nt offer just the acuator. Sealed the outside cover with clear silione.

take negative side of battery off before starting then open the rear tailgate and remove the inner panel and then you can see what the problem is and on the Ford vans I have owned it was just the clip and you can put it back on use gloves because it can be sharp edges in behind those panels

Power sliding door won't close properly on 2005 Freestar

U will need to buy a can of spray white grease and clean and then lubricate all the tracks the door channels on as well as all the latches for the door, this will cure the issue in most cases, did allot of these while working at a Ford dealer.
