Question about 1981 Ford F 100

2 Answers

I just bought a 1981 ford f100. Ran fine for a week, then it ran really rough for about 10 minutes one day. It cleared up, so I thought maybe the choke stuck for a bit. A week later it did it again, so I started checking out the engine. That's when I discovered foam (antifreeze, I assume) in the oil. Is there any other cause besides head gasket or warped head? I have really babied the truck and never had it over 55. Can I hope for a simpler cause, or should stop typing and start pulling the head?

Pull off the head and replace the head gasket and check for a warped head, and shave if necessary at the machine shop.

Hopefully there isn't a cracked block.

If antifreeze is in the oil, that's indeed a telltale sign of leakage between the oil passageways and the cooling system.

Maybe if the leak isn't too bad, try some cylinder head gasket seal from Barrs Leak, but I wouldn't get my hopes too high on that one since it only costs about $30 for that repair option, and it doesn't work on larger leaks.

Ran completely out of gas last week - put gas in - car started fine- ran a little rough and idled rough. Now 10 days later MIL light on in dash and perform service message. Won't go out after several

have the fuel filter changed and have the computer checked for codes incase something else is going on and they can be cleared to turn off the light.any dirt in the lines should be out of them by now.its possible that there is dirt in the injectors and a fuel system service should be done to clean them which is a recomended service on all cars anyways.you can have the fuel pressure checked while its in the shop to make sure the pressure is within specs.

Check engine light

Please be advise that if you drive this and the check engine light is flash on and off. you should not drive it any more till you find the problem because you can cause more damage to the truck if the light is flash. there are many things that could cause this running condition: TPS, EGR, Bad injector, Idle air control and more would need to know codes that are in the computer, engine size 2 or 4 wheel drive, does it have A/C, Cruise, traction control, ABS brakes, then I maybe able to help you
