Question about 1991 Volvo 740

1 Answer

I just changed out the rotor, cap, wires and spark plugs on my 1991 740 Volvo (4 cycl fuel injection). I will not start and seems to be missfiring. I want to confirm the proper plug wire routing to the distributor cap.

If you are looking at the distributor (mounted in behind the camshaft:
The order is 4,3,1,2. Cylinder 4 is closest to the distributor and cylinder 1 is at the timing belt side of the engine. 4 is on the far left of the distributor cap, 2 is the last one on the right.
If you continue to have starting and running issues, and all other issues related to air and fuel have been vetted out, the crank angle sensor is next on the list. Usually the system cannot detect Cylinder 1 and it will guess as to what Cylinder 1 is before it gives up. If you meter the sensor (three wires), two will meter between 200 and 300 ohms. Still no-go? Make sure your fuel system is working properly. On Regina models, the oxygen sensor is a PTC resistor, and on Luftmassenmesser Hidstraht it is a galvanic battery. They are not interchangeable.
On Regina models, check the ignition coil connections. This is the square box on the driver side suspension turret - it is removable and the coil can be separated from the control unit. There are two connectors for the coil, what happens is they start to galvanize over time.
On LH models, the coil is on the passenger side suspension turret. Check those connectors as well. Also on LH models there is a Power Stage (a couple of transistors) on the front of the engine bay, aside the battery. Although you can test it, it is better to change it since the heatsink grease is usually baked by now, resulting in overheating of the joints in the case.
On Regina models, you do not have the Power Stage there - it is integral with the coil.

I have a 2002GMC Sonoma 4wd with a 4.3l edi and cmfi. I have a random missfire code of p0300 and i have changed spark plus wires cap and rotor and right bank upstream o2 sensor still skips

Fuel injector's not firing ? edi and cmfi ????? What do you thing this means . Center port fuel injection ! The powertrain control module (PCM) enables the appropriate fuel injector on the intake stroke for each cylinder. A voltage is supplied directly to the fuel injectors. The PCM controls each fuel injector by grounding the control circuit via a solid state device called a driver. A fuel injector coil winding resistance that is too high or too low will affect engine driveability. A fuel injector control circuit diagnostic trouble code (DTC) may not set, but a misfire may be apparent. The fuel injector coil windings are affected by temperature. The resistance of the fuel injector coil windings will increase as the temperature of the fuel injector increases. Is there spark to the plug wires for those cylinders ?

If this has the coil over the spark plug try replacing the coil. If it still has wires replace the cap, rotor and wires. Do a compression test and check for a mechanical problem like a burnt valve.

My 1999 suburban is missfiring on cylinder one, changed new plug, cap & rotor, wires

You seem to have covered almost everything electrical. That leaves mechanical. Either valves sticking, frozen, or spring, cam broken. Fuel line or injector to that cylinder is the only other item I can think of. Let me know how it works for you.

What cani do to fix the missfire

How often does it misfire? A slip in a timing belt/chain can cause missfires. Bad spark plugs as well.

Check your fuell filter. You may have low pressure from a clogged filter. Also do a full tune up, plugs, wires and cap and rotor if it has it. Some fuel injector cleaner may help as well. As a precaution have the pressure regulator on the fuel injection rail checked before you do all the other things. They can go bad without warning. Good luck.

could be distributor. remove cap and rotor and slotted wheel. look for brown dust covering optical sensor from bad bearing. If yes, replace distributor. It triggers spark and fuel injection.

Missfire on cycl 1and 6

JUst check the spark plugs. It may need replacement.
Also check and clean the distributor cap and rotor. Check the ignition wires for breaks. This is the standard
ignition systems check for all gasoline fed engines.
However, for diesel drives, the problem is in the injection
pump that needs to be serviced and recalibrated (injector
nozzles replaced)

Cylinder 5 missfire 1999 tahoe

How is the pressure in the fuel rail? a low pressure will cause erratic firing of the injectors - the further down the rail u get usually the worse the problem. If the fuel filter was not changed regularly or if the vehicle stood for a while, dirty fuel/standing fuel at some time in the recent past, this **** will accumulate in tyhe injectors. To avoid spending a loada cash, swap a few injectors around and see if the problem moves with the injector.

A typical tune up includes spark plugs, air filter, fuel filter, spark plug wires, distributor cap and ignition rotor. You must determine which parts are needed before you start.
I would suggest to first check spark plugs and spark plug wires.
