Spray carb/choke cleaner under intake on mating surface to lower intake. go around the whole intake, dont be shy but spray it.(motor running) does rpm change? if bad seal Usually rpm raises. if so replace intake gaskets, $22.00 parts. Is check eng light on? if yes code check it.although it will only read lean as it cannot detect air leaks. if no code or light carb cleaner is the way to check for air leaks. NOT STARTING FLUID!! I just finished this repair on my 98 tonight, 1-6-11 it runs great, idles also.

  • Faulty mass air flow sensor
    - Intake air leaks
    - Dirty mass air flow sensor
    - Dirty mass air filter
    - Mass air flow sensor harness is open or shorted
    - Mass air flow sensor circuit poor electrical connection
  • Before replacing the mass air flow sensor, try replacing the air filter and cleaning the air flow sensor with low compress air or mass air flow sensor cleaner. Reset code and drive vehicle. If the code comes back, it may be necessary to replaced the mass air flow sensor.

Scanned my computer , came up with a PO 171 and 174 what does this mean?

P0171 AND P0174
P0171 - System Too Engine Cylinder Lean Bank 1xicon.jpghttp://engine-codes.com/p0171.htmlForum CodePossible causes- Intake air leaks
- Faulty front heated oxygen sensor
- Ignition misfiring
- Faulty fuel injectors
- Exhaust gas leaks
- Incorrect fuel pressure
- Lack of fuel
- Faulty Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor
- Incorrect Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) hose connection Tech notes Dirty air filter of faulty air flow sensor are common causes for the P0171 code of the problem.

P0174 FORD - Fuel Injection System Too Lean Bank 2xicon.jpghttp://engine-codes.com/p0174_ford.htmlForum CodePossible causes- Intake air leaks
- Faulty front heated oxygen sensor
- Ignition misfiring
- Faulty fuel injectors
- Exhaust gas leaks
- Incorrect fuel pressure
- Lack of fuel
- Faulty Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor
- Incorrect Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) hose connection Tech notes The codes is usually set when there is an intake leak after the air flow meter, before replacing any parts check for loose or broken hoses and intake gasket leak. On Ford some models dirty air filter, and dirty or faulty air flow sensor are the cause of the problem.

Check engine light on; engine codes P0171 and P0174

p0171 is lean exhaust bank one ( passenger side) and p0174 is lean exhaust bank 2 ( drivers side). First we need to look for vacuum leaks, low fuel pressure, Intake air leaks after the mass air flow sensor, pvc system. Because you have both sides lean I would start looking at these spots.

I have a code reader and the code is P0171 P0174 System too lean. what makes the system too lean?

P0171 - Fuel Injection System Too Lean Bank 1
Possible Causes:
- Intake air leaks
- Front Heated oxygen sensor may be faulty
- Injectors may be faulty
- Exhaust gas leaks
- Incorrect fuel pressure
- Lack of fuel
- Mass air flow sensor may be faulty
- Incorrect PCV hose connection

P0174 - Fuel Injection System Too Lean Bank 2
Possible Causes:
- Intake air leaks
- Front Heated oxygen sensor may be faulty
- Injectors may be faulty
- Exhaust gas leaks
- Incorrect fuel pressure
- Lack of fuel
- Mass air flow sensor may be faulty
- Incorrect PCV hose connection

What Causes These Codes: Fuel injection system does not operate properly. The amount of mixture ratio compensation is too large. (The mixture ratio is too rich.) The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) monitors the engine Air/Fuel mixture ratio, the actual mixture ratio can be brought closely to the theoretical mixture ratio based on the mixture ratio feedback signal from the heated oxygen sensors 1. The PCM calculates the necessary compensation to correct the offset between the actual and the theoretical ratios. In case the amount of the compensation value is extremely large (The actual mixture ratio is too lean.), the PCM judges the condition as the fuel injection system malfunction and light up the engine light. The codes is usually set when there is an intake leak after the air flow meter, before replacing any parts check for loose or broken hoses and intake gasket leak. On Ford some models dirty air filter, and dirty or faulty air flow sensor are the cause of the problem.

I have replaced the port seals, isolater bolts, cleaned the EGR ports, plugs and wires, and chanced the air filter. I was getting both 171 and 174 codes. Now after 60 miles or so, pulled the codes again...

P0171 is a lean fuel condition . The computer reflashed has nothing to do with it . Vacuum leak intake manifold probably . If both P0171 & P0174 were back could be fuel pump low flow or restricted fuel filter . or O2 sensor problem or mass airflow sensor. Suggest you take it to a qualified repair shop to have it diagnosed .

The injectors may be showing bad because of the stuff that you put into the fuel tank. It will work itself through. If the system is showing lean fuel, replace the O2 sensor if it has over 100,000 miles on it. It directly controls the fuel/air mixture. Replace the fuel filter, don't try to clean it. If things still aren't running right, check the fuel pressure on the fuel rail located over the injectors at the the test port (which looks like a tire valve). The pressure should read around 40 PSI with the engine running. Any reading much lower suggests a worn fuel pump or a defective fuel pressure regulator. You can rent a kit that checks the pressure safely.
