Question about 1998 Oldsmobile Intrigue

1 Answer

When it's around freezing or below 32 degrees, our 1998 Olds Intrigue won't shift out of park until the car is warmed up. My wife uses it as a daily driver and has to wait about 5-10 minutes before she can shift it into Drive. This just started last winter and seems to be getting worse. Haven't tried to fix it yet, hoping for a simple solution.

Sounds like the park shift solenoid has some water or other material such as some kind of drink in the cable that is freezing. Is it a console shifter or steering column shifter?

2002 Olds Intrigue ignition switch does not work properly. Sometimes I have to "jiggle" it for several minutes before it will work. Yesterday I had to move the shift lever before it would work and t

there is no connection between the ignition switch and the shift lever. One turns the power on to run and start and the shift lever prevents start until neutral or park is set . Therefore it is possible that the fault is not in the switch but in the adjustment of the neutral switch on the transmission.

This is normal. When cold, the engine is in "fast idle" to warm up the engine more quickly. Solution: allow engine to warm up.

I have a 1998 olds achieva, it won't shift out of park, what's wrong?

sounds like the interlock is actually broken, so I would go get another assembly from a salvage yard and replace the one you have..good luck..

My 1998 Olds Intrigue shifter button sticks when cold, 35 degrees and below. Yes, I do put my foot on the brake. Works ok after car warms up. Dale

Dale-there is a 'staple' that holds the shift handle onto the shaft, it is on the front side of the handle. Use a pick or a small screwdriver of some type to pull that staple out, and use a spray lubricant on the mechanism for the shift lock release on the shaft.

Won't shift out of park when cold, will when it's warm. Can the breake release be wired around?

If by cold you mean below freezing then I'd suggest you look for water in the shifter and/or shifter cable. If you have water intrusion in the cable then replacement is the only fix. If it is in the shifter then you need to find out how it is getting in there and remedy the problem.

What can cause my 98 olds intrigue to shift

your torque converter maybe to blame here. a simple fluid pressure test will tell you that. if the pressure is good, your valve bod might be due for a change.

Shift "freezes"in Park until the inside of the car is warmed up

My 95 Windstar van had a solenoid that required you put your foot on the brake before you could get it out of gear. that is possibly sticking because of the cold or the relay that controls that needs to be replaced.

Wont shift from park

Check and or replace the switch on the brake pedal, or check the lock out mechanism in the shifter.
