You should be able compress the driveshaft inward ( into itself ) enough to get it to drop out. ( be very careful with the U-joint endcaps -- if a cap comes off the U-joint it is a real pain to get all the needle bearings back in place ).

Chockblock front wheels to prevent truck rolling, and jack vehicle up and place a jackstand under frame to prevent vehicle falling. Remove driveshaft, seal is now visible to be pried out for new one to be lightly tapped into place with a rubber mallet or hammer, along with a wooden block, taking care to keep new seal straight while replacing. replace driveshaft and check fluid level, lower vehicle and remove chockblocks.

How to remove transfer case from 2002 tahoe


  • Disconnect the ground cable from the negative battery terminal, by using a wrench to loosen the retaining bolt and pulling the clamp off the terminal.

    Raise the vehicle and support with jack stands placed underneath the frame.

    Drain the transfer case. Locate the drain plug near the bottom of the transfer case. Place a waste oil collection pan underneath the plug and use a socket to remove it. Once all the fluid has drained out, reinstall the plug.

    Remove the bolts that connect the rear driveshaft to the rear axle yoke using a socket. Lower the driveshaft, and slide it backward underneath the rear axle to disengage it from the transfer case. Remove it from the vehicle.

    Remove the bolts that connect the front driveshaft to the front axle yoke using a socket. Lower the driveshaft, and slide it forward underneath the front axle to disengage it from the transfer case. Remove the driveshaft from the vehicle.

Removing the Transfer Case

    Label and disconnect the electrical wires and vacuum lines connected to the transfer case. Use masking tape and a marker.

    Remove the transfer case shifter rod. Using needle-nose pliers, remove the clip that connects the shifter rod to the transfer case. Slide the rod away from the transfer case.

    Position a floor jack underneath the transfer case. Raise it enough to take the weight of the transfer case off the transmission.

    Remove the bolts that connect the transfer case to the transmission using a socket or wrench.

    Slide the transfer case rearward to disengage it from the transfer case. Lower the floor jack, and remove the transfer case from the vehicle.

How do I take off my drive shaft? When i accelerate, I hear a squeeking noise and i believe its my rear driveshaft. I need to take it off and bring it to a machine shop to get fixed but how do i take it...


There should be 4 bolts on the rear differential side of the driveshaft...remove these 4 bolts along with the c shaped saddles and put them aside where they won't get lost...the driveshaft will drop down..then all you need to do is pull the other end out of the transmission/transfer case. the transmission side has a splined shaft...don't worry about aligning it up when you get the d-shaft back from the ,mach shop..all you need to do to realign it is to jack up one side of the rear so the yoke on the differential will line up to the shaft ..make sure you block the wheels so the truck won't move. put everything back in reverse order as mentioned above...make sure the bolts on the rear saddles are tight(or else the driveshaft may come off)

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2. Mark the position of the driveshaft yoke on the axle companion flange so they can be reassembled in the same way to maintain balance.
  3. Remove the flange bolts and disconnect the driveshaft from the axle companion flange.
  4. Allow the rear of the driveshaft to drop down slightly.
  5. Pull the driveshaft and slip yoke rearward until the yoke just clears the transmission extension housing seal. Mark the position of the slip yoke in relation to the transmission output shaft, then remove the driveshaft.
  6. Plug the transmission to prevent fluid leakage. To install:
  7. Lubricate the yoke splines with suitable grease.
  8. Remove the plug from the transmission and inspect the extension housing seal; replace if necessary.
  9. Align the slip yoke and output shaft with the marks made at removal and install the yoke into the transmission extension housing. Be careful not to bottom the slip yoke hard against the transmission seal.
  10. Rotate the axle flange, as necessary, to align the marks made during removal.
  11. Install the driveshaft yoke to the axle flange. Install the bolts and tighten to 71–95 ft. lbs. (95–130 Nm).
  12. Lower the vehicle.

How do you replace the rear u joint on a 99' gmc sonoma 2 wheel drive


Mark the driveshaft and yoke in a manner that will allow you to reassemble it in the same orientation that it's in now. This is done to avoid driveline vibrations. Next remove the 4 7/16" head bolts on the driveshaft yoke. Use a lone screw driver or pry bar to pop the driveshaft off the yoke and slide the other end out of the transmission. Using a u-joint tool press out the old u-joint and press in the new one. You could bring this to a machine shop or a mechanic and have them do it for you if you don't have the correct tools. I think autozone may rent a ball joint press out for free. Next reassemble it orientated the same way you took it off.

What needs to be done to remove the draft shaft on a 1968 CORVETTE with 327CCs?


Actually a relatively easy job as both the front and rear universal joints are held on with straps and bolts. Assuming the car is safely in the air and not going to roll away, first mark a line on the differential yoke and on the driveshaft so you can reinstall it in the same position. Repeat this procedure at the front end of the driveshaft at the transmission yoke.

Next remove the 4 bolts and 2 straps that hold the front universal joint into the transmission yoke, then you can lightly pry the universal toward the rear of the car and free it from the yoke. Have a prepared place to lower the front of the shaft on such a small piece of plywood or something to prevent it from being damaged. Also take care not to remove the yoke from the transmission to prevent fluid loss, even if you need to temporarily tie the yoke in place.

Next remove the 4 bolts and 2 straps that hold the rear universal joint into the differential yoke, then you can lightly pry the universal toward the front of the car and free it from the yoke.

How do i remove the drive shaft out o my 66 fairlane


Once you're under the car, Remember be safe, use jack stands, etc, You should have 4 bolts that connect the driveshaft to the yoke of the rear end. These will probably be really tight, you may need a cheater bar to break them loose. Once the rear of the drive shaft drops down then you should be able to pull the driveshaft straight back, toward the rear and it should drop out of the rear of the transmission. You may have some tranny fluid leaking out. While doing this you want to handle the Ujoints carefully so that you don't allow the caps to fall off, losing some of the needle bearings, unless you're going to replace the Ujoints.On that age of car, the driveshaft might be in there pretty tight so you may have to use some force, be careful. Good luck.

The bolts that hold the drive shaft in the car fell out


here's the illustration with parts and numbers you need. take to dealer parts counter. If the bolts cam out, are you sure the u-joints did not get damaged?

JACK UP VEHICLE, BLOCCK OTHER WHEELS. REMOVE DIFF. COVER & PLACE VEHICLE IN N. USING A BOX. END 8MM WRENCH; ROTATE DRIVESHAFT TO YOU LOCATE CARRIER RETAINING BOLT ON RH SIDE OF CARRIER. THIS BOLT HOLDS TO RETAING PIN IN CARRIER, APROX. 1/1/4" DIA. REMOVE PIN. PUSH BOTH AXLES INWARD. LOOK INTO CENTER OF CARRIER WHERE AXLES MERGE. EACH AXLE WILL HAVE A RETAING CIRCLIP. REMOVE EACH CLIP & PULL AXLE OUT ABOUT 1 FOOT. REMOVE REAR DRIVESHAFT & SHAFT YOKE @ FORWARD PART OF DIFF. A SPECIAL PULLER IS NEEDED.
