Question about Chevrolet 1500

1 Answer

Ok i have a 1989 5 speed standard, in the morning not a problem after work it wouldnt shift into reverse or 5th but all the other gears work perfectly, lately i have noticed a little more play then usual, its a top load tranny, so i unbolted the shifter boot...etc ...looking down in the tranny you can see there is a rod about 3/8" diameter with a bushing on it witch the shifter clips into, and to me they should be one with each other with no play, but i can move it about 1/4 " both ways and i think that is stopping it from moving far enough to the right to engage those gear. there any way of taking the pin out without separating my tranny? thanks

Sounds like you got a mistry shifter. It might just be out of ajustment, or just plane wore out. If its an old shifter you would be money a head to buy a new one and put it in. Summit racing sells them, Heck i'am not real sure but you might be able to get one at auto zone, or napa, or advance auto. There just a phone call a way. They might even sell kits to repaire yours.

Cant find my reverce 1997 caviler

Check your owners manual for the correct shift pastern...It is a natural H pattern, with 5th gear upper right...reverse should be all the way to the right and lower right to engage...the knob does not always indicate the correct pattern...may have been changed...also be sure it is a 5 speed...most of these Cavaliers were 4 speeds...with reverse being upper right instead of 5th gear upper right...confirm in your owners manual if possible...will show illustration...Hope this helps.

5th gear synchronizer shifter

sound to me like a basic sloppy shifter, did you inspect the shifter and all parts associated?
usually the synco dont stop shifts, only causes grinding
unless, it is shattered. (rare that)
it only matches speeds, so if cracked in half , you can shift by
double shifting , like racers and truckers did for years, "crash boxes"

If you are saying the engine speed does not change with the gas pedal, then yes I would suspect the throttle position sensor. You can have it checked with an ohm meter.

Will not shift into 5th gear all other gears ok

Could have had a passenger fall against the shifter....when in reverse. (Taking to assume this is a "s standard" trans) ??? If so the shifting fork inside the trans case may have bent.

TRANSMISSION JUMPS OUT OF REVERSE

if you have lifted the jeep, there may not be enough room for the the gear shift to fully engage reverse. mine did this when i added a four inch lift. the simplest and cheepest soultion is to cut away about a 1/4 to 1/2 inch out of the sheet metal behind the gear shift in the reverse position. i didnt even have to remove enough to create a hole that the boot wouldnt cover.

2000 dodge diesel 3500 6 speed manual transmission- having problems shifting in to reverse and ist gear. mutch worse when hot. some times the only way is to shift very quick from 5th for reverse.and 2nd to...

I am going through this now my 2000 ram 3500 always had a problem with reverse

I chocked it up to a quirk of the transmission! But my mechanic found out that they only placed this trans in late 1999 and early 2000 trucks first years the 6 speed was offered. It comes with a smaller clutch and synchronizer that are no longer available unless you find a dealer with old stock sitting on a shelf. I am having to updated my cultch and am having to replace the gears that will allow the new type synchronizer to work this in just a about ½ the price of a new transmission BOHICA/FUBAR

So just get ready for a shock if you need to replace synchronizer rings

300Zx will not shift out of 5th gear

Dear javatrader: There are very few solutions to this problem. The fact that you had mentioned 5th & Reverse, tells me that you problem is has two possibilities. Both relate to the same component.
The shift fork for Fifth gear and reverse are the same as well as the hub which the fork fits over.
When you Move the stick shift, it moves one of 3 rails in the transmission of which one is 5th and reverse. The hub is what locks the transmission in gear. The gears are what are referred to as synchromesh. This means that when you shift from gear to gear, it makes it possible to easily make the transition without the gears grinding while the car is in motion. The synchros are in fact, kind of a "BRAKE" for the gears so that when you go to shift into that gear, the synchronizing ring, slows the gear down enough to match the speed of the counter gear allowing it to engage with it, without grinding. As the hub slides into gear, there are spring loaded "KEYS" which are small pieces of steel about 1/2 inch long, 1/4 inch thick and 1/4 inch wide with a little hump in them to push up into a small cavity machined into the hub when it slides over it, thus locking the gear into place until you pull the stick to move it out of place. If a key pops out, it could cause the gear to stick, not allowing you to pull the hub back because the key has popped out at an angle which prohibits the hub from sliding over it.
Another possible senario: The fork is secured to the shift rail with a part called a "Roll pin". If this part shears, the car will be stick in what ever gear it was in at the time the pin sheared. If the pin shears, the stick will still move out of 5th gear position but the transmission won't.
This problem, unfortunately is not one a layman can fix. This is best left to a professional.
Good luck......If you are pleased with my answer, please write in, that you are satisfied with my answer. I am new in this "FIXYA" group and need more people responding to work my way up the ranks.
