Question about 1997 Chevrolet Suburban

1 Answer

I have a 97 Suburban that has a loud chirping sound coming from the serpentine belt area. I have already replaced the belt, tensioner, and idler pulley. It still isn't fixed. Could the fan clutch be squeaking? There is a bit of rust in that area. Due to the fact that most everything on the top side has been replaced it has pretty much been narrowed down to the fan/water pump area.

If it has A/C it could be the A/C compressor clutch, Try turning on the A/C and see if the noise goes away or changes.

It happens while the A/C is off.

I have a chirping or bearing sounding noise, that I am trying to isolate on my daughters college car. Sound varies with RPM.

Get an inexpensive mechanics stethoscope and put the end on the shaft part of idler pulleys, housing near bearings of alternator and water pump etc.
If that doesn't give clear results, try squirting a little water on the serpentine belt as if runs [a length of small drip irrigation hose works really well to get a little water on the belt]. The water will provide harmless temporary lubrication to the belt and change the sound if it is caused by the belt slipping.

Go buy a Goodyear Gatorback serp belt that's what I did and now I don't have anymore chirping noise. Its a bit expensive but worth it. I bought the cheap belts in the past to save money.

Probably a dry bearing or incorrect tension. WD40 will make matters worse! Use good quality engine oil if you think lubrication will cure it.

Noisey sounds from under the hood when starting car

If it is a rattling sound the starter may be loose, the starter bendix gear might be damaged.

If it sounds like a fan, it is likely the cooling fan.

If it is squealing, it is the serpentine belt. The idlers may be worn, their bearings may be dry- they make a chirping sound at slower speeds when they are dried out. Replacement is the best option.

Air pumps can sometimes make a thumping sound, and if certain emissions valving rusts through, it can be outright exhaust noise.

If it is a high pitch whine, that is usually the alternator. It is not a good sign when they begin to whine. Alternator bearings can also fail, and the sound varies.

Water pumps and fan clutches can also fail and they tend to make softer sounds. These can be checked by checking for radial play in each item with and without serpentine belt tension applied.

1994 Chevy K1500 5.7 liter- replaced serpentine belt.next day got a chirp.replaced idler pulley, alternator, and tensioner pulley, but not the actual tensioner.sounds like chirp is coming from power steering...

The chirp is from scale or a glaze on one of the pulleys. If not black or shiney in color clean it with brake cleaner and spray some belt dressing on the pulleys

How do you change an idler pulley on a 97 mercury grand marquis

Using either a serpentine belt tool or a long ratchet and a socket on the tensioner pulley bolt, turn the tensioner to relieve tension and pop the belt off. Remove the idler pulley bolt and replace the idler pulley. To finish it up simply reinstall the belt.

sounds like a bearing in an idler or tensioner is going out.you need to take to any good mechanic and he can pinpoint the chirp.
