Question about Mini Cooper S

1 Answer

My 2006 Mini Cooper S the back hatch is acting strange. While the engine was running, and I was waiting to back out of a parking spot, the back hatch popped open, I got out and closed it, I returned to the drive seat, prepared to drive, it happened again, and again I got out made sure nothing was in the way of the latch, closed it again, returned to the driver seat, and you guessed it, it popped again, I again closed it, and it did not pop again, however when I arrived home, it would not open. I tried to lock and then unlock the car and back hatch, but to no avail, I can not get the back hatch to open. At one point months ago, when I went out that morning, the hatch was popped, but I just assumed I did not close it well, it is possible that the happened then. How can I get my back hatch to work??

SOURCE: hatch problem

The glass did close and neither the glass or rear hatch would open. It did turn out to be the lower hatch switch which I had replaced.
Thanks for the follow up.

often times this problem ends up needing a front sunroof section of the conv top replaced. The cable that drives the hooks to unlatch is most likely broken and that is currently the only fix. EXPENSIVE. Sorry

Unfortunately, you will have to remove the panel of the door, Use flathead screwdriver to pry open. It is very likely the spring fell off.

You have water ingress into boot release microswitch, pretty common failure. Easy to replace. remove the rubber boot just now to let the water out.

Start on a day you're not using the car. park it in a spot where any fluid leaks will be imeadiately obvious and if you see a fluid leak jack the vehicle on the spot and get under it and start looking for wet spots. It could be something as simple as a bad or loose hose clamp.

COOPER S HAS DONE 30000 MILES THE FAN HAS STARTED RUNNING AFTER ENGINE OFF , ONLY STOPS WHEN ENGINE TURNED BACK ON THEN OFF AGAIN

the fan is running because the sensor is picking up a hot spot(top of the engine(head)when you switch on again the computer is verifying the engine temp)to see if it needs choke)then shutting down the fan.....this is why one needs a computer to find out whats what with modern cars......

R50 is the designation that BMW use for the hardtop (i.e. not the convertible) hatchback version of the Mini One and Mini Cooper produced from 2001-2006, and including the special edition versions called 'Mini Seven' and 'Park Lane', and also the Mini One D (the diesel version) from 2004-2006.
R53 is the designation used for the Mini Cooper S (a supercharged version with 170 bhp) from 2002-2006, and also the special edition versions which were called the 'MC40' (2004), 'Cooper S works' (2005 on), the 'Mini GP' (2006) and the 'Cooper S checkmate' (2006)

How do I replace the 3rd brake light red cover on my 2006 Mini Cooper S, I can't tell if the lens is separate from the light fixture or if it is a all-in-one pop in unit with lens attached.

It is all in one light fixture with lens. Open the rear hatch and there are three either T-20 or phillips heads that hold the third brake light. Remove all three and remove the light, disconnect the connector plug and install the new light.
