Question about 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse Coupe

1 Answer

For weeks the car had to be jumped to start, I thought the battery was a problem until one day it stalls in the middle of the road while I was waiting to turn (so I was idling) and wouldn't start up until jumped. Took the alternator out and tested it, it works. Hooked it up, battery works too. No idea what's wrong. It sat for a week during this time. Drove it home tonight (40mins) and as I was about to pull into the parking space at my apartment, it stalled and won't start up again. I don't know what to do. -- has 112k miles - owned it 2.5 months. 4 cylinder automatic.

You may check for corrosion on your battery terminals, if corrosion is present then disconnect the cables and clean the corrosion. If thats not the case then just check to make sure that your terminal is connected tightly to the battery post. I recently had this trouble on my brothers spyder and no matter how tight i got the terminal it still would move when i pulled on it so I just went to the parts store and bought a new terminal for $6.99 and had it running again in 10 minutes.

You have the battery and the alternator and the alternator belt and if they are working fine there must be something that is draining the battery. You need an auto electrician to check what the drain is. In such cases,on various vehicles, the BCM, body control module, proves to have something to do with it. Get A GOOD AUTO ELECTRICIAN to check if there is a particular component

you need to check the alternator charge rate as this is the sort of problems associated with a low charge rate , unfourtunately you will need the engine running to do this so get a voltmeter ready for when you jump start the engine and read across battery terminals if reads below 13 volts the alternator needs replacing ,check that the drive belt is tensioned correctly as this would make alternator give low charge, also will need the OBD codes reading after all this going on , the engine doesnt need to be running for this just ignition on ,will give codes for sensor/switch which might be out because of the starting/running problems

think u hav a bad cable from the alternator to the batt--they wear and gain resistence eating up alternators--its the red cable used to charge batt--some mechaanics just add anothr wire beside the old and it works--hav a honest guy test the old wire

Most likely the battery. Most auto parts stores will check it for free with the hopes that you will buy your replacement from them.

WELL I WOULD SAY FUEL FILTER.BUT YOUR FUEL FILTER AND FUEL PUMP COME AS ASSEMBLY.THERE ARE FEW MORE THINGS CAN CAUSE YOU STALLING PROBLEM.WATER IN FUEL.IDLE SPEED TOO LOW.HAVE CAR SCAN FOR FAULTY PCM OR COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR.FAULTY FUEL INJECTOR.AND IGNITION COIL.SEE YOUR VECHICLE HAS 6 COILS 1 FOR EACH CYLINDER.

2005 equinox will start and stall

Sounds like a fuel filter that gets clogged with dirt and then gets unclogged when you put the fuel treatment in your gas tank. Love your car it needs a little TLC. Replace the fuel filter and make sure all fuel line connections are tight.

Starting problems

If the starter spins but the engine doesn't turn over, then it's either loose or corroded battery cables (remove and clean connections, especially at the starter) a bad starter solenoid, or a bad starter (bendix drive). Remove the starter and have it tested. If the engine turns over but doesn't start check to see if the anti-theft light is on (if it is you have to replace the ignition cylider). If the Theft light isn't on the most common problem to cause starting and stalling problems on the 4.3 L engine is the ignition module.

Try checking relays in the fuse box under the hood. If all checks out ok, check timing belt/chain.
