Question about Nissan Maxima

1 Answer

I took my 1996 nissian maxima into the dealer ship today to get my check engine light checked out. They didnt fix my engine light and plus when i went to go pick up my car my shifter was stuck in park which my car has NEVER done before until i took it to the dealership. The dealership guys fixed the problem somehow and said it wouldnt happen again, but then once i left and parked ad went to get back into my car the same probelm occured. My friend and i looked it up online and it said something about a break light switch we looked and messed around with this for an hour and the shifter started to work again. I made sure it would work and put it into park and then drive several times and then came back into the house. About 10 minutes later i went back into my caar and the problem occured again. My car never did this until i took it to the dealership once again. Is there any way i cant fix this problem my self or do i have to order a special part from my machanic any help would be awesome please!

Most automatic cars require that the foot brake be applied before the gear selector is allowed to be shifted from the Park position as the unlock signal is taken from the lamp side of the brake light circuit.
It appears that you have an intermittent fault in the brake light switch and replacing it should solve the problem. The switch is located on a bracket under the dash near the top of the brake pedal arm. You could put a bridging wire across the terminals to confirm if the switch is out and the rest of the wiring is OK. If the shift enable and lights then work, replace the switch.
Replacement is as follows:

To remove switch, disconnect wiring, loosen locknut and unscrew switch. Replacement is reverse procedure. To adjust, screw in switch until operating button is fully depressed by pedal arm, tighten locknut and reconnect wires. Check for correct operation of lights. You may have to unscrew switch slightly to get best operation.

My 96 2.0 golf didnt pass smog due to the ect sensor(check engine light is on) I replaced the sensor and now the red thermometer coolant level light comes on. What went wrong?

Whenthe check engine light comes on, one or more diagnostic trouble codes (DTC) are stored inthe engine control module.

I own a 2005 nissian pathfinder suv. The check engine light came on for second time after the dealer had just replace a valve in the engine. should I pay for 2nd.service when they didnt fix it the 1st.time...

I would say don't pay,if it is the same problem they just worked on.
I am asumming that was not warrantee work?
So why are you at a dealer?
When the warrantee ends, you never go to a dealer again, unless your Bill Gates or Warren Buffet.

Nissan Maxima 1996 issues-sensors

Dear Gandhi
1) You better check the 'Idle control relay' - and pray this is not your computer - who may be shorted ( The Computer that govern all elec. functions in the car - is also getting signals from your Mothor Mounts' to ensure a more balanced ride' If one or more of the Motor Mounts ( There are 3 ) are defective - they send a signal to the computer - and the yellow light ( Check engine soon) - will appear'
2) A Computer can only be fixed by a Nissan dealer ( est. $750 ) 3) The Idle control valve - can be adjusted too ( Again - by a Nissan Dealer only .
4) It is NOT an easy problem nor cheap . In short - your best bet is with the dealer - and ask them for a diagnostic ONLY ( est. $100 ) Don't tell the dealer what YOU think or did .......just tell them the 'Yellow light comes on' .......they'll take it from there.
Sorry I don't have better news today .

Best of luck

1996 Nissan Maxima GXE Fail Smog Check Due To ECM System Failure

There is no way to fix this issue according to my Nissan Dealer Service Manager. The monitors will not run and therefore the vehicle will not pass smog. If you need assistance from California's SMOG authority they are called "The Referee" and you can call them at 1-800-622-7733.

Does the 1996 Nissian Maxium have a timing belt or timing chain?

Just about everything has a timing belt now days, because they are quite. A timing belt is a very important part of your car, it won't run without it, and in many cases if it breaks you will trash your engine in an instant. I'd change every time I change my other belts, I honestly believe that is a good rule of thumb, Your owners manual should tell you what the manufacturer recommends. I hope this helps, I do this for free, and I just want to help people.
