Question about 2000 Mercury Cougar
It means that the on board diagnostic(OBD-II) has found an irregularity in the system.
I could be the result of a lot of things. Something as little as the gas cap being loose can trigger it.(Check that first) Sometimes it's a one time problem, and will shut off after a certain amount of start-up/run cycles. But if it's persistant, it could be something more.
Usually, if it's running fine, it's likely a sensor somewhere in the emmissions control area.
Really, you need a code reader to determine the error definatively. If you're the do it yourself-er type; they are available at your local auto store. As well as repair manuals; which will have the code definitions in them. However, for the most part the code will lead you in the general direction; but will not tell you exactly whats wrong. For that you'll need to run more tests and diagnostics on the individual system components where the fault took place.
Your other option is to take it in to get it tested. If you look around you'll probably find a shop in your area that will plug it in for free. They can discuss with you the significance and/or severety of the fault, and discuss possible testing/repair methods.
If you're not accustomed to working on your own vehicles, and don't mean to become acquainted with the process; the latter is your best option.
If your son bought the vehicle from a dealer; I'd start with bringing it back to them, and having them look further into it. The unfortunate reality is that, the previous owner probably new about the light; and reset it so it wouldn't show untill later. I wouldn't expect that they take the car back or anything; but the least they could do is to tell you what's wrong.
If your area doesn't have any emissions laws/tests; it's probably not a dier circumstance. If it starts flashing, then you need to bring it in to a shop A.S.A.P.
