Question about GMC Safari

1 Answer

2000 GMC Safari van v6 180,000 miles. 2 years running po420 code comes up and reset with a code reader. Works good for that. Slight miss at 60mph plus loaded and pulling, so I drive at 58mph. Then the other day as I approched an intersection I noticed a shudder and a shake (ruff running of the motor) and nearly stalled at the intersection. As I continued the next 6 miles or so home it ran good at higher RPM but rough at slower speeds and idleing. So I got it in the driveway checked the codes, po101, po300, po420, then shut it down. Well to my suprise it will not start again.......any suggestions? Can a MAF sensor keep it from starting? Smells like it is getting fuel. Had a 76 T-Bird act the same way, it was the crank position sensor on that problem.

P0101 is the MAF sensor and if it has even a tiny amountof crud on it, it can keep the dar from running. clean with ELECTRONICS cleaner not carb/brake spray.

P0300 is multiple misfire detected. Sound like it might need tune-up parts

P0420 is the catalyst system bank 1 low efficiency.

I would start with changing the plugs, wires, cap and rotor. And clean the MAF sensor with the proper cleaner. Then see if the car starts and idles. If it does then clear the codes. If it doesn't run right then I would suspect the MAF sensor is kaput. The P0420 code can be caused by a poorly running engine.

Break light stayed on after changing break pads GMC safari van

You may just need to have the code cleared. If you have a reader that will erase or reset dtc codes thats all it will take. some codes will reset just by doing a few drive cycles but other codes need to be cleared. There are a lot of places that will read or reset the codes for free if you don;t have a reader. That would also give you a chance to see if there are other problems such as brake pad sensors that are also part of the problem.

Sounds like an engine sensor problem (could be one of several) - start with an error code (DTC) check with a good code reader and follow up if there are any.

2000 GMC Safari AWD Suddenly won't start

I have a 2002 Safari with around 220k miles. I went out of town for several days and when I came back it would not start. I eventually got it started after about an hour. This happened again when I did not driver it for a week. This time I could not start the van. The fuel pump was spinning and it was getting gas. I took off the engine couling inside the van and inspected the rotor and cap. They were completely corroded. I put in an after market set for less than 30 bucks and the van started right up. I plan on getting the wires and plugs replaced but I don't think I want to do that myself due to tight access. Good luck.
