It is the heater core coolant supply line or return line, there are two pipes.

The rcommended repair if this pipe is leaking or rusted out is to replace it with an equal length of rubber heater hose, the pipe is most likely no longer serviced by Ford parts division.

2003 mercury sable blows cool air when heater is turned on.

Most likely it is a clogged heater core. Have your heater core reverse flushed or your blend door is stuck open.

Where is the dpfe holes located

The DPFE itself is a sensor. It plugs on top of 2 Vacuum lines that are usually Silicone and high temperature capable. The other end of the Vacuum lines attach to a metal tube coming from the exhaust pipes. The DPFE measures the flow inside this exhaust tube and adjusts the engine accordingly.

The metal tube can rust and often if there is a metal joint that hides the rust. Any leak in this tube will render the DPFE useless.

2002 mercury sable overheating

Generally speaking, you can run the engine with or without the heater connected and it should make no difference in cooling the engine.
I wonder if the engine is actually running above 220 degrees.
Do you know where the steam or smoke is coming from ?
It could be a leak rather than actual overheating.

Water leaking out engine near front fire wall

Sounds like one of the connections to the heater core are leaking. Should be hoses connecting to the metal heater core pipes. The heater core is on the inside of the car with metal pipes going through the firewall to heater hoses.

I have a 2002 Mercury Sable 3.0. I noticed when

The clicking noise is the motor for the "blend door". The heater core and the air conditioning side share the same ducting. When you move the knob a small motor moves the door letting the respective hot or cool flow happen.
The heater core is probably blocked. The engineers at Ford have the coolant hoses bypassing the core with a WYE at the firewall. The coolant takes the path of least resistance and stops FLUSHING the heater core and it eventually clogs.

Why does my 2001 Mercury Sable climate control only blow heat?

It could be the door that should be shuting off the heater core area is not shuting. The door works with engine vaccuum. The vac. comes from the intake manifold. With your car being a few years old, the heat from the engine may have caused the vac. hose to dry out and crack or become disconnected. With the engine cold and off, look under the hood. A small size vaccuum hose should be connected to the intake manifold and run inside the cabin area. This is one thing you can check. I hope this helps you.
