Hi

it is most likely the air mass or MAF sensor, same thing, too much or to little air most likely to much, check air pipes for rips and tears ensure all air lines have a good seal and are not taking in too much excess air

Regards

Dan

Idle is high at start - 1800 rpm. Seems like excessive white smoke from exhaust. Put into reverse and back out of driveway it has a regular shudder (bump bump bump) but not hard metal grinding sound.....

white smoke out of the exhaust would be a sign that it is burning coolant... if it goes away after it warms up, it could just be condensation inside the exhaust pipe. 1800 rpm is a very high idle, maybe have your IAC motor on the throttle body checked... check engine light? if so have the code read at your local auto zone.

I get a check engine light when engine is above 1800 rpm idling or when accelerating on the road. Mass airflow sensor???

check the plumbing from the maf to the engine first ..make sure there is no place it is "sucking " air from it must be solid not even a little hole or rip and make sure it's tight

95 mustang 3.8 has high idle about 3,000 rpm when i disconect the air intake hose from the throtle body idle drops to 800 rpm but is lopey and very rich

Best take it to a repair shop. If your removing air intake ducting and starting the vehicle, you don't understand the technology.

Idle goes back and forth 700 to 1800 rpm about avery 10 seconds with the a/c on, 700 to 1500 with a/c off. codes show cam positining sensor bank 1 bad, coolant cirtuit high side bad, and back 2 running too...

yep, nothing wrong witht the ac, might need a charge, thats whats causing the high side sensor to go off, as far as the surging you might take off the oxygen sensor and clean it and replace, that usually helps, if not it needs a new one, the oxygen sensor controls the fuel mixture, and crankshaft sensors are kinda cheap so replacing that wont hurt... good luck!
