Changed relay it cranked drove not far replaced intake gasket drove note far changeed camshaft position sensor and wires spark plug ran but died again found fuse blown for 1fan under relay got running but not far want crank trys

Sounds like the ignition module. Change that and see what happens. Is this by any chance on a 3800 or otherwise called a 3.8? if so try to push in the left side of the harness where it plugs in to the module just in front of the coil packs. while you are pushing have someone crank the car. if it starts and you let go and it dies then you know that is your problem.

Diagnose the no spark first. Check to make sure the crankshaft position sensor is not damaged and is plugged in. Check to make sure the camshaft sensor is also plugged in . Does the car have a RPM gauge? If so, check to see if the needle moves while cranking the engine, this would indicate the crank signal is good. Also, check to make sure the ground wires got attached under the ignition module bracket. The short burst of fuel is not uncommon on an engine that is not running.

With that much already invested, why give up now? How about the crank position sensor-was that replaced as well? For spark control and spark timing, the computer needs inputs from both the cam position sensor and the crank position sensor before it can know when to cut power to the coils for spark to occur.
Before proceeding any further, you should check for diagnostic trouble codes. You would need an OBD 1 type code reader or scanner for your olds. Any stored codes may help you find the problem.
You can test the ignition system by checking for spark on a spark plug wire when the engine is cranking over. Pull the plug wire off a spark plug and put in a clean spark plug into the wire. Lay the plug so the threads are touching metal on the engine somewhere. Have someone crank the engine over and watch for a spark from the spark plug. If you have a blue, snapping spark when cranking, ignition is good.
One last note: since it dies when driving, there is a possibility that you have a malfunction in the pcm-the computer.

In my opinion, it sounds like either a clogged fuel filter, the ignition control module, the mass air flow sensor, camshaft position sensor, crankshaft position sensor or the fuel pressure regulator. It could also be a combination of two or more of these.

You require a OBD I diagnostic scan to pinpoint the problem. AutoZone will perform a scan at no charge or you can borrow a scanner from them.

1. Remove the ignition coils (lines at end this document), then return here once you have gotten the Coil
Packs off and precede with step 2 from here.
2. Clean the spark plug recesses with low pressure air. CAUTION: Wear safety glasses
when using compressed air, as flying dirt particles may cause eye injury. NOTE:
Clean the spark plug recess area before removing the spark plug. Failure to do so could
result in engine damage because of dirt or foreign material entering the cylinder head, or
by the contamination of the cylinder head threads. The contaminated threads may prevent
the proper seating of the new plug. Use a thread chaser to clean the threads of any
contamination.
3. Remove the spark plugs from the cylinder head. NOTE: Allow the engine to cool before
removing the spark plugs. Attempting to remove the spark plugs from a hot engine may
cause the plug threads to seize, causing damage to cylinder head threads.
4. Inspect the spark plugs.

1. Measure the spark plug gap on the spark plugs to be installed. Compare the measurement
to the gap specifications. NOTE:
• Use only the spark plugs specified for use in the vehicle. Do not install spark
plugs that are either hotter or colder than those specified for the vehicle. Installing
spark plugs of another type can severely damage the engine.
• Check the gap of all new and reconditioned spark plugs before installation. The
pre-set gaps may have changed during handling. Use a round feeler gage to ensure
an accurate check. Installing the spark plugs with the wrong gap can cause poor
engine performance and may even damage the engine.
2. Install the spark plugs to the cylinder head. NOTE:
• Be sure that the spark plug threads smoothly into the cylinder head and the spark
plug is fully seated. Use a thread chaser, if necessary, to clean threads in the
cylinder head. Cross-threading or failing to fully seat the spark plug can cause
overheating of the plug, exhaust blow-by, or thread damage.
• Refer to Component Fastener Tightening Notice in Service Precautions.
Tighten the spark plugs to 18 N.m (13 lb ft).
3. Install the ignition coils.

IGNITION COIL(S) REPLACEMENT
REMOVAL PROCEDURE
1. Remove the air cleaner resonator and outlet duct.
2. Disconnect the engine wiring harness electrical connector (1) from the oil pressure sensor (2).
3. Disconnect the engine wiring harness retainers (1) from the power steering pump (2).
4. Disconnect the engine wiring harness electrical connectors (1, 4) from the following:
• The exhaust camshaft position (CMP) sensor (5)
• The camshaft position (CMP) actuator solenoid valve (6)
5. Disconnect the engine wiring harness retainer (2) from the camshaft cover (3).
6. Disconnect the engine wiring harness electrical connectors from the following:
• The engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor (1)
• The fuel injector harness (2)
• The ignition coils (4)
• The heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) (5)
7. Disconnect the engine wiring harness electrical connector from the intake camshaft position (CMP) sensor.
8. Carefully disengage the engine wiring harness conduit from the camshaft cover, and position aside.
9. Remove the ignition coil bolts.
10. Remove the ignition coils from the camshaft cover.

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
1. Install the ignition coils into the camshaft cover. IMPORTANT: Ensure the ignition coil seals are properly seated to the camshaft cover.
2. Install the ignition coil bolts. NOTE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions. Tighten the ignition coil bolts to 10 N.m (89 lb in).
3. Attach the engine wiring harness conduit to the camshaft cover.
4. Connect the engine wiring harness electrical connector to the intake CMP sensor.
5. Connect the engine wiring harness electrical connectors to the following:
• The ECT sensor (1)
• The fuel injector harness (2)
• The ignition coils (4)
• The HO2S (5)
6. Connect the engine wiring harness electrical connectors (1, 4) to the following:
• The exhaust CMP sensor (5)
• The CMP actuator solenoid valve (6)
7. Connect the engine wiring harness retainer (2) to the camshaft cover (3).
8. Connect the engine wiring harness retainers (1) to the power steering pump (2).
9. Connect the engine wiring harness electrical connector (1) to the oil pressure sensor (2).
10. Install the air cleaner resonator and outlet duct.

I have a 2003 suburban that has me stumped! I was on the freeway and it lost power (foot on the accelerator and it wouldn't go!), I limped it to an Auto Zone to scan it and it said maf sensor and map...


Hello, Have a look at your Crankshaft and Camshaft sensors. As I remember there was a problem on some Chevies with the Crank sensor and it caused a different problem with the timing. But it probably could cause more problems so its' suspect.

While you did the filter and Regulator for the fuel, did you do a fuel sample? Also some of the ECU's can be refreshed and it is possible that you lost some info in the main computer and just need a reload of the program.

Although you changed the Intake manifold gasket, did you do a Vacuum check or mist the Vacuum lines while the engine ran? You should see if the Vacuum reading is okay. Then see if there is a Vacuum leak somewhere.

I hope my solution is very helpful to you. It looks like you spent quite a bit to solve this.

This should give you a clue as to how to replace the timing belt on the camshaft pulleys.prev.gif next.gif Camshaft and Valve Lifters REMOVAL & INSTALLATION 1.6L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Negative battery cable
    • Timing belt
    • Crankcase ventilation tube from the valve cover
    • Spark plug cover bolts and the cover
    • Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor connector
    • Spark plug wires from the plugs
    • Valve cover nuts, washers, cover and gasket
    NOTE: Be very careful not to nick or scratch the camshafts.
  4. Hold the flats of the intake camshaft in position using an open ended wrench and remove the camshaft gear bolt. Remove the gear.
  5. Hold the flats of the exhaust camshaft in position using an open ended wrench and remove the camshaft gear bolt. Remove the gear.
  6. Mark the camshaft cap locations so that they may be returned to their original positions.
  7. Remove the camshaft cap bolts in the sequence illustrated.
  8. Remove the caps and the camshafts. Fig. 1: Loosen the camshaft cap bolts in this sequence using several passes - 1.6L engine 9307zg85.gif
    To install:
  9. Lubricate the camshafts and caps with engine oil.
  10. Install the caps and the camshafts in their original positions.
  11. Tighten the camshaft cap bolts in the sequence illustrated to 12 ft. lbs. (16 Nm). Fig. 2: Tighten the camshaft cap bolts in the sequence illustrated using several passes - 1.6L engine 9307zg84.gif

  12. Measure the camshaft endplay on both camshafts. The endplay should be 0.003-0.009 in. (0.10-0.25mm).
  13. Install the intake camshaft gear. Hold the flats of the intake camshaft in position using an open ended wrench and tighten the camshaft gear bolt to 49 ft. lbs. (67 Nm).
  14. Install the exhaust camshaft gear. Hold the flats of the exhaust camshaft in position using an open ended wrench and tighten the camshaft gear bolt to 49 ft. lbs. (67 Nm).
  15. Apply a small amount of gasket sealer to the corners of the front camshaft caps and to the top of the rear valve cover-to-cylinder head seal.
  16. Install or connect the following:
    • Valve cover, washers and nuts. Tighten the nuts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
    • Spark plug wires to the plugs
    • Spark plug cover and bolts. Tighten the bolts to 27 inch lbs. (3 Nm).
    • CMP sensor connector
    • Crankcase ventilation tube to the valve cover
    • Timing belt
2.0L and 2.2L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Negative battery cable
    • Timing belt
    • Crankcase ventilation tube from the valve cover
    • Spark plug cover bolts and the cover
    • Spark plug wires from the plugs
    • Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor connector

  7. Remove the camshaft cap bolts in several passes of one half turn each in the sequence illustrated.
  8. Remove the seal ring from the camshafts. NOTE: Make sure the camshafts detaches evenly from the bearing seats in the front guide bearing.

    To install:
  10. Lubricate the camshafts and caps with engine oil.
  11. Install the caps and the camshafts in their original positions.
  12. Tighten the camshaft cap bolts in the sequence illustrated to 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm). Fig. 4: Tighten the camshaft cap bolts in the sequence illustrated using several passes - 2.0L and 2.2L engines 9307zg37.gif

  13. Measure the camshaft endplay on both camshafts. The endplay should be 0.0015-0.0056 in. (0.040-0.144mm).
  14. Install the intake camshaft gear. Hold the flats of the intake camshaft in position using an open ended wrench and tighten the camshaft gear bolt to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm), retighten the bolt an additional 60 degree turn and finally an additional 15 degree turn.
  15. Install the exhaust camshaft gear. Hold the flats of the exhaust camshaft in position using an open ended wrench and tighten the camshaft gear bolt to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm), retighten the bolt an additional 60 degree turn and finally an additional 15 degree turn.
  16. Install or connect the following:
    • Valve cover, washers and nuts. Tighten the nuts to 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
    • CMP sensor connector
    • Spark plug wires to the plugs
    • Spark plug cover and bolts. Tighten the bolts to 27 inch lbs. (3 Nm).
    • Crankcase ventilation tube to the valve cover
    • Timing belt
    • Negative battery cable

I have a 1996 Plymouth Grand Voyager SE with a 3.3 liter V6 Engine. It hasn't been firing on the 6th and 3rd spark plugs, and is only running off of 4 of them. I was told to replace the camshaft position...


The coil pack unit's circuit #3 drives plugs #3 and #6 directly from the PCM. If the cam sensor was defective, it should not fire any plugs. Suspect bad wiring from the PCM to the coil pack, the PCM unit itself, or a segment of the camshaft position sensor surface has lost magnetism causing missing signal to the PCM. An oscilloscope is the best test instrument for chasing down a missing pulse problem. The missing timing signal also explains why the PCM would report a 'bad camshaft sensor'. Hope this helps!

check the 2 wire molley plug going around the front of the intake down into the injector i have found many of those tend to overheat on the plug just cut it and splice the wires back togehter

YOU NEED TO CHECK DARK GREEN/ORANGE WIRE AT IGNITION COIL WHEN CRANKING ENGINE FOR POWER..IF NO POWER,SHUTDOWN RELAY IS NOT BEING ENERGIZED..THIS ENGINE ALSO HAS CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR ON END OF CYLINDER HEAD..ENGINE CONTROLLER NEEDS CAM AND CRANK SIGNALS TO ENERGIZE THE SHUTDOWN RELAY..UNPLUG CRANK SENSOR AND CHECK VOLTAGE ON ORANGE WIRE..SHOULD HAVE APPROX 8V..IF NOT..UNPLUG CAM SENSOR AND SEE IF 8V SUPPLY RETURNS..IF NO POWER TRY UNPLUGGING VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR LOCATED IN TRANS HOUSING WHERE RIGHT SIDE AXLE COMES OUT OF TRANS..IF 8V RETURNS..THE SPEED SENSOR IS SHORTED INTERNALLY..THESE 3 SENSORS SHARE THE SAME 8V SUPPLY CIRCUIT..WITH SPEED SENSOR UNPLUGGED,PLUG CRANK SENSOR BACK IN AND TRY TO START ENGINE..HAVE SEEN THIS SAME PROBLEM AT WORK RECENTLY
