Hello littleagle58: My name is Roger and i will help you. You did not say which motor you have in your car. The 2.8 has a oxygen sensor located in the exhaust manifold and is located between the engine and the firewall. The 3,8 has a oxygen sensor located left hand side at the rear of the engine. Should you need further help lease just ask. Please rate the answer. Thank You for using Fix Ya, Roger

The o2 sensor is in the exhaust. It is in the Y-pipe on the back side (firewall side) of the engine.

My 1997 grand prix idiles high when you start it stays at 2to 3 grand on r.p.m

The most common causes of high idle speed is a faulty idle air control valve, a sticking throttle cable, or dirty throttle body.
It could also be a vac leak, but that usually does not come and go.

Grand prix gt 1997 3800,runs good getting 20 miles to the gallon not good ,my buddys have them same cars 27 miles to the gallon33 on high way ,runs real good like it should be getting that ,change air...

If the car has 100,000 miles on it ,the
front (2) O2 Sensors will be slow to respond,
change them. You can see them with an
oscilloscope ,red lead on black wire at sensor connector
(back probe with hat pin) Black lead from scope to chassis
or ground. You can use a VOM Meter but won't see the time

Clean MAF Sensor
Check Fuel Pressure at rail
New spark plugs
Check TPS Voltage KOEO

Standing in front of the car looking at the engine bank 1 is the cylinders on the front of the engine. These are cylinders 1-3-5. On the rear is bank 2 cylinders 2-4-6. The O2 sensor is located screwed into the exhaust manifold or the exhaust pipe on the front of the engine.
