That trans is an RE4FO2A or V and check the fluid level,if the fluid level is good,check the axles to make sure they are seated all the way in the trans,and that the axle's CV joints aren't broken.Other than that,likely an internal problem with the forward clutches,torque convertor,or pump assembly.

Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control System
The automatic transmission shift lock control is a safety device that prevents an inadvertent shift out of PARK when the ignition is ON. The driver must press the brake pedal before moving the shift lever out of the PARK position. The system consists of the following components:

The automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid.

The automatic transmission shift lock control switch.

The park/neutral position switch.

With the ignition in the ON position, battery positive voltage is supplied to the park/neutral position switch. When the transmission is in the PARK position the contacts in the park/neutral position switch are closed. This allows current to flow through the switch to the automatic transmission shift lock control switch. The circuit continues through the normally-closed switch to the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid. The automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid is permanently grounded. This energizes the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid, locking the shift linkage in the PARK position. When the driver presses the brake pedal the contacts in the automatic transmission shift lock control switch open, causing the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid to release. This allows the shift lever to move from the PARK position.
Park Lock Solenoid
The park lock solenoid is a safety device that prevents an inadvertent shift out of PARK when the key is in the OFF position. The key must be in the RUN position to release the park lock solenoid. The system consists of the park lock solenoid. With the ignition in the ON position, voltage is supplied to the park lock solenoid. The park lock solenoid energizes through a permanent ground unlocking the shift lever. With the ignition in the OFF or ACCY position the park lock solenoid de-energizes and locks the shift lever in the park position.
Shift Lever Does Not Move with Brake Pedal Depressed
DEFINITION: Transmission shift lever will not move out of the PARK position with the ignition ON and the brake pedal pressed.

  1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.

NO Go to Step 3

  3. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.

My 2001 Volkswagens, jetta will start , but won' MOVE!! Have my transmission completely went out? If so , how much is a new one. Should I buy only from VW dealerships only ! ! or will online be O.K.

• The transmission range switch
With the ignition in the ON position, battery voltage is supplied to the automatic transmission shift lock control switch. The transmission range switch provides a path to ground for the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid in the PARK position. With the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid energized the shift lever is mechanically locked in the PARK position. When the driver presses the brake pedal, the contacts in the automatic transmission shift lock control switch open, de-energizing the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid. This allows the shift lever to move from the PARK position. When the shift lever is out of the PARK position the controlled ground contacts in the transmission range switch open. This prevents the automatic transmission shift lock solenoid from energizing when the vehicle is out of the PARK position.

Pickup starts great, goes into all gears but won't move. It's like it is still in nutural.


Assuming the pickup is an automatic, check the transmission fluid. The #1 cause for transmission slippage is lack of Automatic Transmission Fluid.

If the pickup is a standard shift, the pin that connects the shift to the transmission has likely broken. You would still be able to shift from the inside but the gears won't engage. A bad clutch is also a possibility but you would have noticed a burning smell prior to the clutch giving out.

Hi, since you use a dextron type 2 automatic fluid then it is not cause of the sticking gear. Rather it should be as a result of a clogged transmission filter. A clogged transmission filtercan cause problems with changing gears because it will not allow the fluid to pass through the valve body or valve solenoids at the proper pressure. Without pressure, the plates won't move properly and you won't be able to easily change gears. This can be symptomatic either by itself or along with burnt or worn out transmission fluid, and both should generally be replaced at the same time, rather than just replacing one or the other.

The transmission is nearly dry. Add some transmission fluid! Automatic transmissions require oil pressure for the car to move, and if you don't have enough oil in it, it won't build up enough pressure to move the car

96 pontiac grand prix gear shift moves but wont go into gear unless you move the car by hand then it clicks and will shift


Are you saying the automatic transmission will not shift into gear or the shifter won't move into the correct position?

It sounds like you have transmission problems but it could be that your linkage is loose or defective. Not enough information to give you a good starting place.

Subaru impreza automatic transmission won t shift


Try replacing the transmission filter and the trannie fluid. Mine would only go in reverse, and now it drives pretty well. This year has a screw on filter. Hope this helps
