The problem might be your Vats security system. This causes the car to either "not start" or "shut down" while running, or start for 5 seconds and then die. (depending on the system) If the security light flashes, i guarantee that this is what the problem is. 1st trick, (if not starting) turn the key forward 2 clicks till right before it would normally start, leave like that for 10 minutes. ( no less ) After 10 minutes, turn key back then forward and your car might start. I did this in my regal for more than a year.

Cheap fix: Bypass the chip in your key. Temporary, but effective.

Never worry again fix: Bypass the whole VATS/Passlock/passkey I or passkey II system entirely. Literally take it out, and throw it away. I just did this in my Regal. Took about an hour. Took longer to find the thing than it did to fix the problem. For a list of cars effected by this problem. See the NEWROCKIES link on the right side of their page.........

----- With this fix, you can take that whole Vats, passlock, passkey **** system out of your car all together. Good info on both sites

Hopefully your system is not getting ready to fail. It happens a lot with GM cars. If your keys have the little resistor or "chip" in them, try cleaning them with alcohol. Sometimes they can get dirty enough that the sensor inside the ignition switch has a hard time reading them. I am giving you a link to really good website that deals with the security issue: http://newrockies.ca/vatsbypass.

Have a 99 grand am.disconnected battery to ch a nge fuel sending unit .assembled back together now can't start car and security light on steady. Help

Sounds like you got a brain error in it and if it has a security system start there for sure, get a diagnostic test. Some parts stores will offer it for not to much money. And it will tell all of whats wrong with it if there is anything besides a security glitch. Good luck

2003 grand am security system signal car wont start

Turn the key to the on position, leave it on until the security light stops flashing. (About 10 minutes) turn key off, then try to start. If it starts it's a bad body control module. Google override directions.

(1999 pontiac grand prix 3100 v6) does advance auto parts or auto zone do the abs scan if the light comes on? Where is my system located on my car?

All most all of the chain auto parts stores will do a free scan and read your faults.

It is located close to the steering wheel under the dash.

My 1994 pontiac grand prix is not starting intermitently. My security light is on my dash and won't go off. It normally will start after a few minutes, but it is happening more and more. I got a new key...

There is no way to override the security system that I know of.You probably have a bad ignition cylinder. This is the part that the key goes into.Unless you know the resistance of that key and then you need to get a resistor of that resistance and put it in the wiring from the ignition cylinder on the wire that goes to the pcm. This will enable the pcm to allow fuel to the engine.Hope this helps.Good luck.

Check engine light sometimes comes on when i start my car never while driving does it come on .may start 5or 6 times without coming on does not go out until car is turned off.

Go to your local Advance Auto Stores, Inc. or AutoZone parts store, and have them scan your OBD system for diagnostic codes. THey will provide you with a list of stored fault indications, which you can then use to further diagnose the issue. The Service Engine light does not need to be on for this service to be successful.

If it is a security issue a code will be stored. Until you check that a code is not stored then all suggestions will be a waste of time.
You really need a diagnostic scanner hooked up to see whats going on.

1999 grand am, the service vehicle soon light has come on, don't know what to check.

you can have the problem checked at most part stores ie: auto zone.... free of charge. have them do a quick odb or error code test on your vehicle and give you the list or code(s) now diagnose each code(s) possible problems and fix the code once all codes have been repaired disconnect battery pos/neg for 5 mins to reset system after reconnection check engine lite may flash from 5miles driven up to 200 miles this simply means system is not ready to display any codes. When ready it has completly done a self check of its diagnostics if you were successful with repairing the error code light will go off this will happen by itself if not successful light will come back on re-test for error codes again and see what has been removed and what didn't get fixed from your initial diagnosis of the error code problerm 1ak+f4pj7cbm32cuniyi2gaaaaaelftksuqmcc

Car just stopedrunning

Its possible. But I would suspect that you would see the security light flashing on the dash if that were the case. Is this the GT or GTP?
