Question about 2002 Saab 9-5

3 Answers

I have a 2002 Saab 9-3. A couple of days ago I started hearing a clicking sound coming from the engine area (don't know if its actually the engine, just in that area). At first, only made sound when driving, then started hearing when idle, but only off and on. Today, the noise is louder and I hear it more often. I can't get it in to the shop until Monday (today is Thursday). I am fearful that I will do serious damage if I drive it anywhere else, including the shop on Monday. What do you think could be the cause??

Check the oil level in the engine (when cold). If ok, then it should be possible to drive it to a shop. Check the spark plug wires to see if one may have come off of a spark plug. Restrict your driving until someone can look at it. Hope this helps!

I would check the engine oil level first. If That's ok check the drive belts are not worn. They tend to ware on the outer edge causing them to peel, that will cause a clicking nose when its peeling into bits hitting other engine parts has it spins

If the 'clicking' sound changes with engine speed you need to check your oil, and pay attention to your temperature guage-it might be a lifter making noise and an oil change would possibly help. If it is a steady clicking noise, it might be a loud fuel injector, possible but not likely.

If it's a high pitched ticking, it's problably a lifter. If the sound is more like a hammer htting the side of the engine, then you've got a rod knocking. Refrain from driving it 'til you can get it the shop.

Sounds like the turbo. Have you ever changed the turbo? If not, I would bet on that. If you've changed it but have more than 60-80k miles on it, same.

Is your SAAB automatic? If so, it is most likely the Neutral Safety Switch. I have had the same problem, it is very common in automatic Saab 9-3 models made in 1999-2002.

Your alarm siren is the problem. You can replace the siren or have the Saab dealer program your car NOT to use it and remove it. When you turn off the ignition your SID will not display anything, unless the key in the ON or START position.
