Several MB models have had tail light recalls due to bulb socket issues and overheating wire connections. It's also possible that the wrong replacement bulbs were inserted at some point. If you mean the back-up (reverse) lights are staying on, that could be due to faulty wiring or a defective backup switch on the transmission gear selector.

Backup lights stay on 1994 gmc sierra 1500 4x4

the reverse switch is stuck on. this switch is in the pan of the transmission. try cleaning the wire connection on the transmission under drivers seat. if this doesn't work I wouldn't pay to fix, I would pull the reverce light fuse or take out the bulbs and if you want reverse lights add some with a different swich on the dash

Location of the Backup light switch.

I didn't find a location for the backup light switch,

But found the following on

Backup Light Switch Operation:
00610_backup_light_switch.jpgAn open switch that prevents voltage from being applied to the backup lights until the vehicle is put in reverse. Putting the vehicle in reverse closes the contact and applies power to the rear back-up lights. Check under the dash or somewhere near the steering column if you have a column shifter. If the shifter closes or opens the backup light switch mechanically, one should be able to trace the cable and mechanisms that turn a cam that connects to the backup light switch, somehow. May have to disassemble the steering column area to see it.

I'm replacing the steerin column in a Geo Metro 1996. All lights work. The back lights stay on.

Sounds like you missed engauging and adjusting the neutral safety/ backup light switch.

But I do not know what you mean by back lights? Back up lights, rear tail lights, interior lights in the rear....???
